The 2.6' OC-E4A Off-Camera Multi-Function Shoe Cord from Canon provides photographers with the ability to remotely fire Canon flashes. Removing the flash from the camera's hot shoe allows unique and dramatic lighting styles that are not possible with a traditional shoe-mounted strobe. Off-camera lighting reduces the harsh shadows commonly encountered with direct on-camera flashes and gives photographs a more natural look. This Multi-Function compatible cord is also compatible with the DM-E1D Digital Stereo Microphone, making it useful for video-based applications.

This works great with the Canon R1 and the EL-5 flash. The cord is just long enough to mount the flash remotely in a small shoot through umbrella for macro work. Works perfectly with Flash Bracketing (Stacking). It is better suited to getting the flash off the camera for off-axis shooting but it is a sure thing for communication between the flash and the camera. Very robust and well made.

I was wondering why the cord had a hefty price. It is definitely a much stronger gauge then the past off-shoe cords. It's very durable and works perfectly. One thing I don't like is how the unit mounts into the camera's hot-shoe. The wire should come out from the side of hot-shoe mount. The cord comes out directly from the front. It sometimes interferes with hitting the flash. Someone may want to re-design and have the cord come out of the side of the unit that is attached to the hot-shoe.

Could you string two of these together to make a greater length cord with the same functionality? (~ 5 ft.)

The Canon OC-E4A Off-Camera Multi-Function Shoe Cord cannot be extended by adding a 2nd cord. These shoe cords are generally for use with a flash bracket where short distances are needed. If a longer distance then 2.6 feet is needed, a wireless trigger flash system would be recommended.

Canon's announcement says this is for the following cameras: EOS R50, EOS R8, and EOS R6 Mark II. Would it also work on the R5?

Unfortunately Canon OC-E4A Off-Camera Multi-Function Shoe Cord (2.6') is not compatible with the Canon R5. That camera does not have the multi function shoe.
