Impact Folding Black Flag Overview

This flag features a two-piece, full-metal frame with a 3/8" frame-mounting pin that makes it easy to attach to standard grip heads. The frame breaks down into two pieces and fits into the included carry bag for easy transport or storage. Perfect flag for the compact traveling creative

Where has the Impact Folding Flag been this whole time?! I've used higher end portable flag systems such as the Matthews Road Rags kit and I HATE how you have to assemble them. Even after proper assembly they still don't feel as strong as they could be. However once I got my hands on a Impact Folding Black Flag I was immediately impressed by the sturdy structure of this flag. You can see as it folds out completely it's still a solid frame around the entire flag, unlike the Matthews Road Rags ones where they have two arms that wing out leaving the whole end open. (Yes I know the open end is for the silks/nets, but not necessary for the solid, the one I use the most). But because it is a complete frame for the flag it makes the assembly of putting the flag on that much easier, not having to wrestle two arms to get where they need to. This is the perfect flag for anyone that doesn't have the luxury of owning their own grip van or truck. It travels easy and works great. I can't think of a real con for it at this time, but my main concern would be how the Flag fabric holds up over time and usage. But I can't recommend this enough to the traveling filmmaker or photographer. [I have received this product in exchange for my honest review.]

When on Set, having flags, of better yet, multiple flags of all sizes is absolutely a necessity for lighting control. On my Sets, I use flags not only to block light spill, but also for shaping light. When I don't have a floppy available, a large flag like the Impact Folding Black Flag 24 x 36 can also serve as a negative fill, even when shooting outdoors, placing it close to the subject to reduce light in one side of the face for a cinematic look. This Impact flag does the job, it feels, and weighs the same as my other flags at an affordable price. This one, I think it offers even a better bang for your buck as it comes with a carrying sleeve and with zipper to protect the fabric from dust, dirt and unnecessary scratches on the fabric. Speaking of fabric, it is non reflective, NFPA 701 flame retardant, thick, feels durable, blocks light like a professional flag is supposed to. When you slide it on the frame, it is a nice and tight fit. You might struggle a little on the Velcro part as it is a tight fit, but that's what you want! A sturdy tension. The metal frame folds in half, by connecting two plugs held by elastic, similar to some Softbox frames I have for light panels. A foldable frame is innovative and a plus for users who don't have a large vehicle, saving space, however, you can't fold it in half with the fabric installed, therefore, I wish the carrying sleeve was the size of the flag fully assembled. You can only put it back in the included carrying sleeve by removing the fabric and collapse the frame like it came shipped. The frame when folded, takes literally seconds to setup. Slide the fabric in and that's all. If you need a grip head, search on BH for the 'Impact KCP-200 (see pictures I've included). I'm very happy with this flag. I can never have enough flags. The total length of the Impact Folding Black Flag (24 x 36"), including the mounting pin, is less than 44" tall, and the width when folded is less than 15".
