Pacific Image PrimeFilm 120 Pro Plus Reviews

Not as expected

I was excited to try out this new scanner with my 120 negatives. It is lightweight, compact, and quiet. The software took some time to download after I figured out that my AV was blocking it. It worked as advertised and as some of the YouTube reviews said, however, it was slower than I anticipated, and the fact that I had to cut my negatives to only two frames was not in my idea of efficient. For others who want to buy this product, give it a try. It could meet your needs. I hope this helps.

Shopping for a medium format film scanner my choices were few — this new one, or gamble again on a 15+ year old Nikon or Minolta with almost no possibility of repair should luck run out, which it did. First day I was ready to send it back because of the sucko software and clunky film holders, But with a little experience and patience, I found it actually makes very good scans. Build quality is nothing compared to those legendary scanners, but I can live with that if the machine performs. So far, it does. Though I do wish there was a way to fine tune the focus. I have no way to do side by side scans with another medium format scanner, but I think these look good. 35mm scans look about as good as from my Nikon LS4000, of course with slightly lower resolution, 3200 vs 4000. The included software is frankly amateurish, but it does work. Thankfully, the excellent VueScan now supports this scanner. (Thank you Ed Hamrick!) The film holders are simply cheap, and the 120 is an embarrassment. But they do work once you get the feel of it. Just make sure the film is flat. Specifically, the 120 holder should allow a full strip of four 6x6, five 645, or three 6x7 frames to lay flat with the extra hanging out the back. Nobody wants to cut up negs. It should have inserts for each size to ensure flatness. And a little more robust plastic would be nice. None of this should cost much. When, or if PIE improves those holders, I think they’d sell a lot more machines — and they should send the new one to all past customers. Despite the shortcomings, I give it four stars overall, considering that scan quality is the most important thing and choices are limited.

Pull entire uncut roll 120 through scanner? Other software control options such as Silverfast? I need manual exposure control.
Asked by: James
I shoot mostly RZ67 and Hasselblad V and that means 1 frame or 2 frames cut. I do have a 645 Pro and haven't tried yet - but given that 3x4.5 is greater than 12cm I don't know how a 3rd frame would be feasible. The holder itself is very clunky and has a block in the end that makes it difficult to insert longer film and having it lie flat.
