I have been using these lights since they were new for about 3-4 years and can attest that they have withstood a lot of different setups. While certainly not on the high-end, they are fine on their own and I found they also fit in well with other light heads I owned for both portraiture and small product shoots in my small studio. Adding some decent modifiers really makes a huge difference in the default options.
I like the portability the kit gives, and its price point is great.
I would recommend these to anyone who is just starting out using flash.
Decent three light kit for beginning portraiture.

This a a decent three light kit for an amateur who wants to get into three light lighting for more professional looking portraits. The monolights themselves are quite good and their 500 WS power is more than enough for use with a wide rage of light modifiers. The other components of the kit are adequate for an amateur like me, though the light stands are a bit on the light weight side for 6 lbs monolights (which easily grows to 8-9 pounds with a decent sized octa box). The fact that it comes with the wireless remote makes it easy to use with cameras that only have a hotshoe and no PC terminal. One nice little feature of the kit is the small side door on the travel case which allows you to access the light stands without removing all the monolights from the case; great when you just want to use a single light.

Will the light and transmitter set work with older DSLRs? Particularly, a Nikon D810.

Yes, the Impact 500Ws Digital Monolight 3-Light Kit with Travel Case, along with the transmitter from the kit, will work using a Nikon D810. This operation will only be manual control.
