Synology UC3400 Overview

Designed for high-availability SAN environments, the UC3400 12-Bay Active-Active SAN Enclosure from Synology is a 2 RU rackmount server with an active-active architecture that ensures uninterrupted block storage services, while providing resilient data protection and a simplified management interface. With its ability to maximize service uptime for critical services, the UC3400 is ideal for organizations that require a mission-critical storage system. This unit has 12 drive bays, each of which natively supports 3.5" SAS hard drives and 2.5" SAS SSDs. Should users need to expand the overall capacity of their UC3400, two mini-SAS ports can each accommodate one RXD1219sas expansion unit. Between the NAS and two expansion units, up to 36 drives are supported.

The UC3400 is powered by dual 2.1 GHz Intel Xeon D-1541 8-Core processors (one per controller) and 16GB of DDR4 ECC RAM (8GB per controller) that can be upgraded to a total of 128GB (64GB per controller). Each controller has four DIMM slots and each slot supports up to 16GB. Network connectivity is achieved via the two 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports (one per controller) or four Gigabit Ethernet ports (two per controller) with failover support, which helps to provide redundancy in the case that a LAN connection malfunction occurs on one port. In addition, link aggregation helps to increase connection speeds beyond the limits of a single network port or cable. If you're looking to expand this NAS, there are two PCIe Gen 3.0 x8/x8 slots (one per controller) that support 10/25GbE network cards or a 16 Gigabit Fiber Channel host bust adapter card.

The UC3400 runs on the DiskStation Manager (DSM) operating system, which helps simplify managing your NAS, as well as accessing and sharing data. A variety of RAID modes are supported, which help provide users with data redundancy, speed, or a combination of both. Supported RAID modes include RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, Basic, and F1. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.

Synology has engineered the UC3400 to be energy efficient. Not only does it offer four 60 x 60mm fans (two per controller) to help keep the system running cool, the server also supports numerous scheduled power on/off cycles and hard drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses. The UC3400 operates using redundant 500W power supplies on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes an accessory pack and two AC power cords. Protection is provided by a limited 5-year warranty.

Reliability and High Availability
Active-active dual controllers work simultaneously to ensure zero downtime in the event of a controller failure, while the non-transparent bridge (NTB) enables inter-domain communication to maximize the protection of in-flight data.
Active-Active SAN with Enterprise-Class Performance
Designed for mission-critical environments, the UC3400 is a high-availability SAN solution supporting Fibre Channel (FC) and iSCSI protocols. With over 180,000 4K Random Write IOPS, it supports a wide range of demanding workloads. It can achieve random writes of over 199,000 IOPS using Fiber Channel and over 189,000 IOPS using iSCSI. With mixed usage of 70% read and 30% write, it can reach over 455,000 IOPS via Fiber Channel and over 374,000 IOPS using iSCSI.
Virtualization Ready
  • Full certification for VMware, vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer, and OpenStack environments.
  • Support for Windows Offloaded Data Transfer (ODX), VMware vSphere Storage APIs Array Integration (VAAI), and ALUA ensures optimized and efficient storage operations.
  • OpenStack Cinder support enables UC3400 to become a block-based storage component.
Flexible Network Options
Boost network performance from 10GbE and dual 1GbE RJ45 ports with 10/25GbE Ethernet cards or 16Gb Fiber Channel host bus adapters on each controller.

The network server is amazing, works well, and has a lot of power. However, it requires specific synology hard drives and is incompatible with anything other than synology hard drives.
