Does the unit recharge the replaceable battery when plugged into the power supply, or do I need to buy a standalone charger?

No, Neewer BH20B Upgraded LED Video Light Stick Kit (2-Pack) will not charge by plugging the light into AC power. You will need to purchase a charger such as the Genaray 2 x NP-F770 4400mAh Batteries & 2 x Compact Chargers Kit.
