Sony FX30 Digital Cinema Camera
Your Ticket to Cinema Mastery
Leveraging the power of a newly developed APS-C sensor, the Sony FX30 provides everyday content creators and aspiring filmmakers with a powerful, yet accessible cinema camera with which to push their cinematic journey to new heights. It blends an imaging pipeline designed for cinematic capture with a comprehensive feature set and intuitive operation to create a complete system for all levels of filmmaking.
Cinematic Expression
26MP APS-C/Super 35 Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor
The FX30's advanced imaging system is on par with other options in Sony's Cinema Line—capturing detailed 10-bit UHD 4K imagery at up to 120 fps—giving it specs fitting a true cinema camera. The newly developed 26MP APS-C Exmor R CMOS sensor and BIONZ XR processor are able to create high-quality 4K images with the Super 35 (16:9) area. This system is capable of capturing 14+ stops of dynamic range and benefits from Dual Base ISO architecture to improve low-light performance.
Firmware Update Version 6.0.0
Firmware update v6.0.0 provides the following revisions for easier capture, monitoring, and recording:

  • The BIG6 home screen provides a clear, easy-to-read display of essential settings used in video recording, including FPS (frames per second), EI (exposure index), Shutter, Iris, Look, and WB (white balance).
  • Fixed/Variable: This new mode lets you directly specify your frame rate without having to set the S&Q mode.
  • Adds Focus Magnifier and Auto Magnifier support in the MF settings when using Bright Monitoring.
  • De-Squeeze Display now includes 1.5 and 1.6x magnification.
  • Record Blackmagic RAW video output via HDMI (see the BMD site for compatible products).
  • Use Creators' app v3.1.0 or later to directly upload videos to Creators' Cloud based on OK/NG/KEEP flags.
  • Supports Manual Framing and Clip Flag notes using the Monitor & Control app v2.4.0 or later.
  • Discontinues the Security (IPsec) function in favor of the more secure Access Authentication.
  • Discontinues the WPA and WEP Wi-Fi functions in favor of the more secure WPA2 or WPA3.
  • Additional v6.0.0 features include automatic recognition of and connection to the separate USB-LAN adapter, display of the remaining capacity of both storage devices during video recording using Simultaneous or Auto Switch Media modes, metadata recording of the optical density of preregistered ND filters, and filtering of images for smartphone and FTP transfer using Clip Flag.
Advanced Capture Options
  • High-sensitivity recording up to ISO 32000 and Dual Base ISO (800/2500).
  • When using S-Log3, the FX30 can capture 14+ stops of dynamic range.
  • Record in 10-bit 4:2:2 using advanced XAVC HS and XAVC S-I formats.
  • Full pixel readout from the 6K sensor creates high-quality UHD 4K video at up to 60 fps.
  • High-speed shooting is possible in 4K at up to 120 fps with a 1.6x crop and in Full HD at up to 240 fps.
  • The HDMI output supports 16-bit raw video out to select, separately available recorders.
Professional Picture Control
Filmmakers will be able to capture images that are immediately ready to publish for projects with fast turnarounds or opt for maximum quality and flexibility in post, thanks to a wide array of picture control options:
  • S-Cinetone uses the same color science as Sony's advanced cinema cameras, including the VENICE line, with natural mid-tones, soft colors, and smooth highlight roll-off.
  • Picture Profiles, such as S-Log3 and HLG, will capture images with expanded dynamic range and flexibility for editors.
  • Creative Looks can be baked into the recorded footage to create a specific mood during recording and minimize the need for editing.
  • Up to 16 user-created LUTs and three presets can be set for accurately monitoring footage or previewing a specific look during shooting. These can be applied to the camera's monitor or EVF as well as the HDMI output.

Operation for All Levels
Professional features will help ensure that beginners to professionals can make the most of the FX30. This includes three log shooting modes:
  • Flexible ISO uses standard ISO settings for simple operation and the greatest flexibility.

  • Cine EI ensures maximum dynamic range capture by recording at a manually selected base ISO setting and applying adjustments to metadata for monitoring and post-production.
  • Cine EI quick will automatically switch between the two base ISO settings for easier operation and great quality.
Intuitive Operation and Controls
5-Axis In-Body Image Stabilization
Sony has equipped the FX30 with a 5-axis in-body image stabilization system that will help create smooth imagery even when working handheld. An Active Mode is available that blends optical systems with digital optimizations to capture ultra-smooth footage. The FX30 can also record gyro movement when the optical stabilizers are turned off, which can be used in post to create a stable shot.
Fast Hybrid AF
Enjoy high-speed and highly accurate autofocus performance in every mode, including 4K up to 120 fps, using an advanced Fast Hybrid AF system that uses 495 points spread across 90% of the image sensor.
  • Real-time Eye AF and Real-time Tracking will track the eyes of humans and animals.
  • AF Assist function will automatically switch to manual focus with a turn of the lens' focus ring.
  • Focus Map makes it easier to visualize the region of focus in your scene.

Comprehensive Feature Set
Plenty of Sony's cinema features have found their way into the FX30:
  • Breathing compensation works with select lenses in 4K up to 60p in camera or up to 120p using Catalyst software after recording.
  • Timecode sync input with optional VMC-BNCM1 Timecode Adapter Cable
  • Tally lights for an easy indication that the camera is recording.
Media Options
For recording high-bitrate footage at high frame rates, the FX30 uses an advanced, versatile set of media slots. The camera features dual CFexpress Type A/SD card slots, allowing users to select between different media types for different situations. CFexpress Type A has ultra-fast speeds that can be used for the FX30's most advanced recording functions, while SD cards are often more common and still have great speed and high capacities.
Catalyst Browse and Prepare Integration
The FX30 records a comprehensive array of metadata that can be read and used for advanced post-production work using Sony's Catalyst Browse and Prepare software.

Metadata recorded includes:
  • Embedded LUT and Exposure Index (EI) data.
  • Gyro and lens stabilization metadata to further reduce camera shake.
  • Breathing compensation can be manually controlled and adjusted.
  • Camera rotation metadata will ensure the footage is displayed as intended.
  • Shot marks can be added to clips during or after recording for reference.
Ergonomic Form for Solo Operation
Lightweight and compact, the FX30 (in a design that matches the FX3) offers users the ability to shoot without needing a cage. Users can also enjoy smooth handheld footage thanks to a 5-axis in-body image stabilization system.

The body features multiple threaded mounting points that are ideal for accessories and a Multi Interface Shoe that supports advanced accessories. Additionally, an integrated fan ensures reliable performance during extended takes.
  • Lightweight body weighs just 1.2 lb.
  • Dedicated zoom rocker.
  • Fully customizable button layout.
  • Five 1/4"-20 threaded mounting points for accessories.
  • Multi Interface Shoe supports advanced accessories.
  • Active cooling fan permits uninterrupted shooting during extended takes.
  • Sporting a matching design to the FX3, the FX30 can use many of the same accessories, such as cages, without any modifications required.
Updated Menu System
The FX30 benefits from a tweaked control menu that makes it more intuitive to operate:
  • The main menu provides a quick view of all your most important video settings, including Picture Profile, recording format, white balance, aperture, ISO, and more.
  • The shooting screen relocates the information on settings and status icons to the edges of the screen so that the image remains clear.

Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens (Sony E)

Ideal for a wide range of photo and video applications including landscapes, portraits, street photography, architecture, and events, the 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary Lens from Sigma is a small, light, and bright standard zoom for crop-sensor mirrorless cameras. Offered here with a Sony E-mount, this lens provides a versatile full-frame equivalent zoom range of 27-75 and a wide constant aperture of f/2.8 throughout the entire zoom range. The lens design includes three high-precision glass-molded aspherical elements coupled with a special low dispersion element. Together they minimize the total number of elements for superb optical quality without excessive weight. Autofocus is exceptionally fast and quiet thanks to the lens's stepping motor, which can be particularly useful when shooting video or fast-moving subjects such as children and animals. An ultimate workhorse, the lens features a minimum focusing distance of just 4.8", enabling it to be used for macro-style close-up photography, and the lens is also outfitted with a rounded seven-blade diaphragm for a pleasing bokeh quality.

Standard zoom lens is designed for APS-C-format Sony E-mount cameras and provides a 35mm equivalent focal length range of 27-75mm.
Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Three high-precision glass-molded aspherical elements are used to help limit distortion and spherical aberrations and contribute to greater overall sharpness and accurate rendering.
Special Low Dispersion (SLD) element reduces chromatic aberrations and color fringing.
Super Multi-Layer Coating minimizes flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.
In-camera aberration correction further eliminates optical imperfections such as distortion and vignetting.
Stepping motor with nearly silent autofocus that makes it perfectly suited to a range of photographic applications, including shooting in quiet environments, recording videos, and capturing fast-moving subjects.
Minimum focusing distance of 4.8" and a 1:2.8 maximum magnification ratio benefits working with close-up subjects.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Sony FX30 E Mount Reviews

Phenomenal Camera!

By Daniel
Rated 5 out of 5

I’ve had the FX30 since December of 2024 and it’s been amazing. I’m primarily a corporate and event videographer and this camera delivers on everything I need. Pros: 1. Dynamic range is great. The shadows have a lot of depth and I feel confident that I can correct most shots if I’m ever under or overexposed. 2. Sharpness: With the over sampling from the 6K sensor you get a very sharp image. It’s perfect for cropping in post when you need to reframe for social media. 3. Body: This body is identical to the fx3 and it’s perfect for the video focused shooter. All the buttons are easily within reach & responsive. You can shoot with confidence knowing you’re recording because you have so many indicators that you’re recording. 4. Autofocus: It’s extremely accurate and I love the different modes. I use the zone mode when I need everything to be in focus 5. Built in fan: Overheating is a thing of the past. I love that I don’t have to think about managing the heat like on my a7iV. 6. Codec: This isn’t the most interesting feature but it’s very helpful practically. The h.265 codec is the perfect mixture of size and quality. It condenses the file small enough to shoot for long hours but doesn’t make your footage feel muddy. Cons: 1. False color: Exposure tools are a huge necessity on cameras but especially professional cinema cameras. These cameras should have false color built in. It’s the best exposure tool to determine skin tone. 2. Variable frame rates: I’d like to be able to shoot at more frame rates than just 24/30/60/120. 48FPS would be great. But that’s just me.

Excellent camera

Not only is the camera top-notch, Sony's Creators' App turns out to be surprisingly useful for remotely activating the camera and importing the images.

The Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN E-Mount Lens included in this kit with the Sony FX30 is an APS-C lens that can be used on a full frame camera but it will need to be put into the "crop," mode so that there isn't any vignette.

How is it in low light situations and what’s max usable ISO?
Asked by: Anthony M.
Works in low light, but of course, you always get a nicer picture using some sort of constant-on light - similar to flash for still pictures. Just for speeches or recording musicians/singer etc, you're better off with a light on a stand that you can place at an angle to them than a light on cam that will shine in their eyes (unless you lower the brightness).

The Sony FX30 Digital Cinema Camera (B&H# SOFX30) will output video for livestreaming through its HDMI port, and yes, that would require an HDMI capture device. However, if you will accept a lower resolution option, it can also be used for livestreaming through the USB C port to a computer.
