Synology DS124 External HDD/SSD Overview

Bring scattered data under control with the DiskStation DS124 1-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology, a compact data hub that empowers effortless data centralization, organization, and sharing. License-free solutions in Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) allow you to establish a secure private cloud, convenient access files from any device, and collaborate seamlessly with partners or clients. The DS124 is equipped with one drive bay that is capable of natively supporting 3.5" SATA hard drives. It allows you to store and share a large number of files with up to 2048 user accounts and 1500 maximum concurrent connections.

The DS124 runs on Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS, which is a browser-based operating system which helps to simplify managing your Synology NAS. Its CPU is a 1.7 GHz Realtek RTD1619B Quad-Core processor and 1GB of DDR4 RAM, which lets users access frequently used files and applications.

Also featured are two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports for connecting external devices, and network connectivity is achieved via the integrated Gigabit Ethernet port, allowing your stored data to be shared with users throughout the network. Data may also be made remotely available through the free iOS and Android applications. For those who require RAID support, the DS124 supports RAID Basic.

The DS124 is engineered to be energy efficient. Not only does it offer a 60 x 60mm fan to help keep the system running cool at all times, its noise dampening design, with a rating of 19 dBA, makes for quiet operations. The server supports numerous scheduled power on/off cycles and hard drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses.

The Synology DiskStation DS124 1-Bay NAS Enclosure operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes an accessory pack, a 36W AC power adapter and an RJ45 LAN cable. It is protected by a limited 2-year warranty.

Synology DS124 External HDD/SSD Reviews

How to use a SSD in the DS124

By David

I already had three Synology NAS systems with redundant spinning hard drives. I wanted to set up another NAS drive using a SSD, since a SSD should have better reliability than a mechanical spinning drive, and redundancy is not as much of an issue. Given that SSD prices are high now due to data center deployment, I decided to abandon redundancy for this project and just go with a single drive NAS. And that was the Synology DS124. I read some horror stories about newer Synology systems. First, to use a SATA 2.5" SSD in the DS124, you need a special plastic adaptor which is NOT included with the DS124. It should be, because the DS124 is otherwise well suited to non-redundant but more reliable 2.5" SSDs. The special 2.5" drive adaptor is difficult to find and ridiculously expensive for just a piece of plastic. If that was the only way to get the DS124 to work, I wouldn't have gone with Synology. But after doing some research I found that the Orico 1125SS 2.5 to 3.5 inch hard drive adaptor would work with the DS124, because its mounting screw holes are in the same positions as a 3.5 inch spinning hard drive. The Orico drive adaptor cost me less than $8. And it works perfectly with the DS124. See included photo. The other horror story concerned Synology's marketing of their own drives to ensure compatibility with NAS hardware. I decided to risk it and found a good deal on a Crucial BX500 4TB SSD. During the setup of the DS124, I was alarmed as an error message briefly flashed on the screen in red letters informing me that the drive was "incompatible." But to my relief the installation continued anyway and the Crucial SSD does in fact work in my DS124. I haven't used any of the "apps" on the DS124 so I can't report on them. My DS124 is used only for network storage. I subtracted one star on my rating for (1) not including a drive adaptor, and (2) trying to steer customers to Synology-branded drives. Otherwise I'm happy with the DS124, and the Synology system "just works."

Fulfilled All Expectations And Requirements

I Had Two Goals, 1) An Inexpensive Way To Backup My Main NAS And 2) Introduce Myself To Synology. I Had The Drive Installed, Configured As An Rsync Server And Backing Up My Main NAS In Less Than 15-20 Minutes. The OS Is Amazing And Well Designed. I Didn't Rate This Based On Any Other Criteria, It Is What It Is So Don't Expect Too Much. One Issue I Have Is You Forced/enticed Into Creating An Account With Synology If You Want To Install More Packages. I Did Not Create An Account, So I Can't Speak About Anything Other Than My 2 Requirements.
