Lauten Audio LS-408 Overview

Few instruments on a drum kit are more important, and difficult, to capture than a snare drum and that's why Lauten Audio has introduced the Snare Mic, the first ever FET condenser microphone designed specifically for snare drums. Sporting a high max SPL of 135 dB, a tight cardioid pickup pattern that rejects 28 dB of off-axis noise, and a durable brass headframe that can survive stick impacts, this microphone is engineered to elevate any snare recording scenario with condenser sound quality and dynamic mic-like ruggedness.

The condenser capsule of the Snare Mic is tuned to capture the best possible snare sound, regardless of snare drum, player, or recording environment. With the onboard sound shaping tools, you can switch on a 5 or 12 kHz low-pass filter for extended bass response and cutting out cymbal bleed, or an 80 or 140 Hz high-pass filter for avoiding spillover from kick drums and toms. The natural 3D sound response of the Snare Mic lets you capture detail from the snares as well as the batter head, reducing the amount of mics needed for capture and preventing phasing issues. Snare Mic includes an articulating hard mount and a padded Cordura carry bag.

Massive Sound, Minimal Bleed
Snare Mic captures a snare drum's true impact, body, and timbre while rejecting up to 28 dB of off-axis sounds. This means clear, mix-ready sonics with optimal phase coherence straight out of the microphone.
One and Done
A single Snare Mic can replace the traditional multi-mic setup needed to capture the full spectrum of a snare drum. Its 3D sound lets you hear the bottom snares through the top head when Snare Mic is placed at lower positional angles.
Small, Mighty, and Made for Rigorous Use
At only 4.2", placement on the most densely populated drum kit becomes effortless. Its vibration-resistant capsule means Snare Mic is ideal for both stand and rim-mounted applications.

A solid brass headframe with a mildew-resistant dust filter protects Snare Mic from stick hits, dust, and debris on stage or in the studio.

Onboard Sound Shaping
Snare Mic's filters differ from those found on a mixing console, preamp, or DAW. Their impact on sonics and overall performance is much more significant than the labeling may lead you to believe.

  • Flat High Cut: Snare Mic's unaltered high-frequency response is designed for a mix-ready sound. It maximizes stick crack and playing dynamics while delivering open, lifelike top-end air.
  • 12 kHz High Cut: smooth out high-end for a dynamic mic-style sound. This setting balances the microphone's sound and adds a dip after 7 kHz to help reduce cymbal bleed, followed by a slight increase from 12 to 15 kHz to help maintain a natural, open snare attack.
  • 5 kHz High Cut: reduce extreme bleed caused by cymbal or stage volume. This setting creates a much smoother response from 1 to 7 kHz, with a slight rise in the 5 to 7 kHz range, followed by an immediate drop-off after 7 kHz, so that more character, presence, and attack can be EQ'd back into a sound without accentuating problematic high-end information.
  • Flat Low Cut: allow all low-frequency information to pass for chest-pounding bottom-end with each snare strike.
  • 80 Hz Low Cut: reduce low-end spillover from kick drums and toms while adding a slight presence boost to the sound of your snare drum.
  • 140 Hz Low Cut: retain the presence boost of your snare drum's fundamental frequency while significantly reducing phase incoherence and spillover from kick drums and toms.
Lauten Lineage
Snare Mic's hand-tuned capsule and dual-bias circuitry are based on the same technologies utilized in Lauten Audio's award-winning Synergy Series microphones.

Wonderful!

I’m the production manager at a mid sized concert hall, and I put this to work immediately upon receiving it for a multi band harder metal show. The microphone captures the snare with headroom, unlike a standard 57. When I went through soundcheck I immediately noticed how I didn’t have to work to make it sound like a drum. It makes a 57 seem like it’s “overloaded” in comparison. It does a significantly batter job at rejection also. You’ll be able to add some top end to your snare without a ton of hi hat. There’s a little in there but it doesn’t sound poor and labored/tinny. The size is actually a benefit also, I had no trouble placing it between two rack Tom’s in a larger kit. I do think I’ll get many years out of this mic, and look forward to using it!

The new industry standard for snare drum

The snare is the voice of your drum kit. In a lot of modern rock and pop recordings the snare drum is often set at approximately the same volume as the vocal. For that reason, recording the snare as well as possible seems obvious to me. The SM57 is a great mic but there is a pronounced mid boost for better or worst. This mic is built like a tank and is a big improvement of the SM57. At over 3 times the cost, it's substantially more expensive but I think it's worth it as important as a snare recording is. I would highly recommend this mic. You just might get what you need without a sample which is saying a lot for modern drum recording.
