Add classic FET compression to your 500-series rack with the Artistic Comp SE from Fredenstein. This single-channel compressor features a link switch that allows for multichannel synchronization of two or more Artistic Comp modules for multitrack recording and mixing and offers classic rotary knobs and switches for quick and intuitive adjustments. Fast-acting FET (field effect transistor) compressors are terrific tools for beefing up guitars, drums, and similar instruments where a more punchy, aggressive sound is desired over more transparent VCA and optical choices. Like most FET designs, the Artistic Comp SE is quite program-dependent and features a fixed threshold setting; the compression depth is controlled by adjusting the input gain, while the output level control is used to make up for the gain reduction.
Compression ratios ranging from a light 2:1 all the way to 20:1 limiting are available, while timing is adjusted via a 3-stage attack switch and a release knob with settings ranging from 0.07 to 2.5 seconds. The Comp SE features a side-chain switch that enables the external side chain input when the unit is installed in a Fredenstein Bento 6 or Bento 10 500-series rack. The side-chain input signal offers a high-pass filter with settings for Off, 300 Hz, and 100 Hz. A 16-segment meter shows you the amount of gain reduction, while the clip LED lights up when the output level reaches +24 dBu, which is 2 dB before clipping begins.
