Freewell FW-V2-3-7STOP Reviews
Overhyped by influencers. Impractical for live events.
Overall, this is a good product, but, it's not great. At a minimum of 3 stops ND, it is simply cutting out too much light to be practical during live events (such as weddings). I shoot on a Sony FX3 primarily on a gimbal with a dual base ISO of 800 and 12,800. It was my goal to always stay at those bases while avoiding having to take my VND off (except at night) as every time I do I have to adjust the balance of my gimbal. If you always shoot handheld or on sticks, this may not apply to you. The problem I'm having is that the 3 stops of reduction is too much to be practical. Almost everything indoors will be underexposed at 12,800 at f/2.8 and 3 stops of ND. You'll typically have to increase to ISO 25,600 or so. In direct sun the VND is great. However, if the talent is under shade, even on a sunny day, you're going to be underexposed at ISO 800 and have to increase to 2000 or 3200. You could go to 12,800, but I'm noticing the colors are slightly less saturated at the higher base so it would be nice to not have to do that. Another thing I'm not a huge fan of that I did not see any other reviewers point out is that to use the CPL, you have to loosen 2 screws and it has a metal on metal scraping feel when you rotate it. But overall this is a relatively minor complaint compared to the other points. Also, at least on the Sony 24-70 GMII, you will not be able to use the lens hood with the magnetic base ring attached. The magnetic system by Freewell is decent for certain uses; however, they should have created a 1-5 stop variant of this like NISI and other manufacturers do.
