Sony ECM-W3S Overview

Record single-person interviews and vlogs with your Multi Interface compatible Sony Camera using this Sony ECM-W3S Wireless Microphone System, thanks to its one clip-on transmitter with built-in microphone and single-channel receiver with Multi Interface Shoe connection. The system supports the recording of both analog and digital audio signals in both mixed or separate channels for the ultimate postproduction flexibility. Two switches on the side allow you to select separate or mixed channel recording and toggle between analog and digital output modes. Toggle safety track recording to protect against unforeseen interruptions. An attenuator switch on the transmitter unit prevents clipping.
Bluetooth Wireless Communication
The units communicate with one another via Bluetooth 5.3 low-energy LC3plus codec from up to 492' away. The Bluetooth LC3plus codec ensures low power consumption and low latency while maintaining high sound quality.
Multi Interface Shoe
Use the receiver's integrated Multi Interface Shoe for cable-free connection to your compatible Sony camera. The camera body can supply power to the receiver when attached. Audio is transmitted via direct digital signal for high-quality sound free of transmission deterioration.
Digital Sound Recording
A digital MEMS microphone with a high signal to noise ratio are integrated into the transmitter to capture clear audio with low noise. You can eliminate distortion even further using the built-in noise cut and low-cut filters. The noise cut filter uses digital signal processing to remove interference, while the low-cut filter reduces unwanted low-frequency noise such as wind, air conditioning units, and vibrations.
Clip-On Transmitter
  • Noise cut filter, low-cut filter
  • Three attenuation settings: 0, 10, or 20 dB
  • 3.5mm TRS jack for external microphone input
Battery Life
  • Each component features an integrated lithium-ion battery.
  • The transmitter can operate for six hours at a time on a full charge.
  • Use the included charging case to recharge the components when on the go.
Component Design
LED indicators on the receiver and transmitter indicate the communication status and allow you to monitor battery levels. All components are designed to be moisture and dust resistant for outdoor shooting. Included furry windscreens reduce wind noise.

Sony ECM-W3S Reviews

Good idea, messy execution

The the compact design and usage of the smart hot shoe on Sony cameras is a nice idea and reduces clutter on the camera.food battery run time is as well appreciated. The charging case is a nice touch and you can see a lot of potential. But it falls through as a semi-professional gear. Connection cut outs are common. I tried it with two separate sets. Range is very limited ( though enough for me ). The bottons are very way too fiddly and the layout could have been more straight forward. An internal recording option would have compensated for the poor transmission behaviour but alas, we are stuck with a radio mic setup that could have been a great little compact solution. But we are stuck with a rather unreliable and fiddly product that could have benefitted from a better design and implementation, especially for that price.

The Sony ECM-W3S Wireless Microphone System with Multi Interface Shoe can be used either with the transmitter's built-in microphone or an external lavalier, but not both at the same time.

Will this work with older MIS shoe equipped cameras like the RX10 IV, the ZV-1 and the ZV-1ii? Any list of compatible cameras?
Asked by: Bob
The Sony ECM-W3S Wireless Microphone System can pass audio through to Sony cameras equipped with the Sony Multi Interface shoe, but power may not be provided for the mic via the MI shoe. At the time of this post (September 29, 2023), the ECM-W3S is fully compatible for both audio and power with the following Sony cameras: ILME-FX3, ILME-FX30, ILME-FX30B, ILCE-6700, ILCE-6700L, ILCE-6700M, ILCE-7CM2, ILCE-7CM2L, ILCE-7CR, ILCE-7RM5, ZV-E1, ZV-E1L, ILCE-7M4, ILCE-7M4K, ILCE-7RM4A, ZV-E10, ZV-E10L, ILCE-1, ILCE-7C, ILCE-7CL, ILCE-7SM3, ILCE-9M2, and ILCE-7RM4. So the ECM-W3S will pass audio through to the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX10 IV Digital Camera, as well as the ZV-1 and ZV-1 II Digital Cameras, but power may not be supplied for the mic through the camera's MI shoe.
