DPA Microphones 2017 Overview

With its winning combination of clarity, consistency, and durability, the DPA 2017 is a versatile shotgun microphone designed to deliver natural, crystal-clear sound for professional broadcasting, journalism, location recording, theater, and TV and film productions. Clarity
  • The 2017's acoustical performance sets it apart from any competition. The supercardioid polar pattern provides focused audio with an effective off-axis rejection response that is more uniform and linear than many similar shotguns.
  • The result is accurate, clean sound from the primary sound source that combines effortlessly with natural sound captured off-axis.
  • At a distance of 23.6", the 2017 sports an effective frequency range of 70 Hz to 18 kHz (±2 dB), with a smooth 2 dB soft boost at 15 kHz for added presence.
  • The frequency curve is intentionally kept flat/linear, to allow the sound designer to tailor the audio to a specific application.
  • A permanent third-order low-cut filter at 60 Hz is on board to eliminate unwanted low-frequency noise such as rumble and handling noise. The filter is intentionally placed this low and steep to ensure the richness of the voice, ambience, or other sounds.
  • Low self-noise allows the mic to deliver excellent performance in quiet environments or with many open microphones.
Consistency
  • The microphone element delivers extraordinary performance reliability, both indoor and outdoor, regardless of temperature and humidity.
  • DPA microphones’ renowned uniformity and reliability in manufacturing ensures minimum variation between units of the same model, providing similar stellar sound characteristics and performance across all 2017 shotgun microphones.
  • The 2017 provides an impressively consistent frequency response independent of the rotation of the microphone around the central axis, thanks to the carefully designed interference tube in combination with the axisymmetric grid.
Durability
  • The 2017 is extraordinarily robust; the technology used for the capsule and the structure surrounding it protects the microphone against moisture, temperature changes, and mechanical impact.
  • The microphone offers a non-modular design without moving mechanical parts. The heavy-duty grid with a carefully engineered slit pattern on the interference tube is super-durable and can withstand impacts without affecting the microphone's functionality.
  • The mic survives exposure to direct rain showers and dries up quickly to return to perfect operation faster than many other shotgun mics.

DPA Microphones 2017 Reviews

I made the right choice!

I bought this mic to upgrade my exterior mic (Sennheiser ME66), I have used the MKH 416 and MiniCMIT, I had my eyes on the 4017b but I went for the 2017 and I adore it. The sound is so clear that I thought I was imagining things, I used it in a few interior shots with really high ceilings and the reverb was fine, nothing out of the ordinary and it has a good reach, in exteriors I trust it to get clean audio and it does, the pattern is forgiving and the humidity is not an issue at all, it's shorter than a 416, feels like a tank. I'm glad I chose the 2017.

Amazing quality and strong build.

This microphone has an incredible sound. It's been put to the test indoors and outdoors. I generally use it on camera for docu-style nat sound as well as boomed for sit or standing interviews. I generally use a Sennheiser MKH8050 cardioid for indoor mic work but was looking for something better suited for outdoor environments. Whereas Sennheiser has a very bass-heavy response, DPA has a much richer, and brighter response. It's a great quality microphone and is better suited to be covered in wind protection without getting a muddy response. The audio quality is crisp and rich. Don't get me wrong, it's still got a strong low end but it's not overcranked. This is a very strong microphone built to withstand a lot of abuse. I love that the interference tube is symmetrical all the way round. I'm looking forward to keeping this microphone in my kit for many years to come. It might be the best value for dollar shotgun on the market right now. You will not be disappointed by this mic.

For exterior use? Moisture resistance?
Asked by: s
The DPA Microphones 2017 Supercardioid Shotgun Microphone is moisture resistant due to the materials used in the capsule design and electronics. It is also resistant to temperature changes and condensation issues.

Also the Rycote Standard Hole Short Fur Softie Windshield (BH #RYSHFS10CFSB) and the Bubblebee Windkiller Short Fur Slip-On Wind Protector (BH #BUBBIWKSS) is approved to work with the 2017 as well. There is a long list of third party accessories on the 2017 page on DPA's website.

Performance in tight spaces with high reflection, like concrete/tile/steel floors & walls?
Asked by: s
The DPA Microphones 2017 Supercardioid Shotgun Microphone will not cut out the sounds that are reflected off of the walls and floors. You will need to use acoustic treatments in the room, such as absorption panels and rugs or blankets, to dampen the reflections. No microphone would be able to cut out the reflections.
