Canon TM-240 Reviews

Honest review of the canon TM-240, A GREAT printer if you are not printing commercially.

This is a nice printer for the money and if you are printing for yourself or small runs of photos or art for signage or museum photos on a budget, it is WELL worth it. Remember that large format printing is not inexpensive. A little bit of background on me and printing. I ran my own printing business for 13 years and I had 8 large format canon printers 24", 44" and two huge 60 inch canon prograph printers. I had over 50k invested in printers and they ran 6 days a week making my business over $300k a year, so I know a bit about printing. I printed on fine art papers and cotton canvas for museum quality prints that I sold online. I sold my business and all my printers last year to do something different in life, but I wanted a new printer to use in my home to print my art and photos and have the option to print items for a local museum I volunteer at. I did not have the space for the larger canon printers as this is in a spare bedroom. It is much smaller and lighter than my older 24" canon ipf 6400...which by the way I ran daily for 9 years with very few issues. My wife and I carried the 240 up our stairs, I could not do that with the 6400. The 240 printer weighed about 100 lbs or so...so you only need two people to lift it. It ships by freight so make sure you have a place for the tractor trailer to pull into. If that is an issue you can always pick it up at the terminal...two strong men can lift the pallet and put it in a pickup truck. Mine was delivered to my house and the driver used a pallet jack to put it in my garage. Easy! -It prints the same resolution as the new canon prograf 2600, but fine art photos will look better on the 2600 due to the 11 ink system as it is just a better machine. IF you have the need for a business and the money as it is $3000, it is worth spending more for the 2600. If you are planning of doing a lot of printing and running a real business do not buy the tm-240, but go with the 2600 as it will pay for itself in the end.................. If your on a budget and NOT printing on large scale all day long, the 240 is a good way to go and is worth the money. -The printed photos, maps and posters look great on the tm-240...they print very nice, clear, vivid and sharp so no worries there. All the images look great in a frame and no one except an "expert" will know that they were printed on a 5 ink printer. -It prints fast....a 24x36 full color print takes about 1 minute to print! -Rolled paper is cheap on ebay at about $60 for a 100ft roll. Don't buy the expensive brand name papers unless you have a client paying for it as they look the same once framed. Also buy heavy weight papers of 190gms or more, they just work better and do not wrinkle. -It is Bluetooth which is great for any space. I have it upstairs and my computer is downstairs, Easy to set up and works no issues. All my older printers were wired into my computer which was a huge pain. -I am more than satisfied with the prints from the 240. OK THE NOT SO GOOD STUFF! *You have to spend $300 for a stand...which is a lot. Don't do it. I bought a nice 40" rolling work bench from home depot for $100 with a solid wood top that is nicer and works better. It does not have the fabric print catcher that the canon stand has, but it is easy to make your own.....and you can make a simple shelf for the HD table to store your papers. The HD stand is way better than the canon stand. *The INK TANKS ARE TINY! at only 55ml. My big 60" printers had 750ml tanks and my 24" printers had 175ml tanks. This is the worse thing canon did to this printer...they want to make money on the inks of course. For $1000 more you can by the canon TM-340 (which is basically the same printer) with 80ml tanks...If you think you want the bigger tanks, JUST BUY THE PROFESSIONAL 2600 PRINTER YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY. Yes you will use ink and "real" ink is about $55 from the manufacturer for the 55ml inks. I use third party inks fromInkOwl. Cost is $25 a color or $120 a set. I have used their inks for over 10 years and great quality, no issues. You can also refill your own inks which works out to $12 a cartridge and very easy to do. So you can save a lot of money and offset the ink costs. Always have a backup set of inks on hand as these small tanks do run dry fast. *The 240 comes with a 2" roller core...the papers you buy need to be on a 2" tube. Lots of paper and canvas is on a 3" tube....just the way it is. It will cost you about $200 for a 3" roller....just canon trying to squeeze out all the cash from you. Worth the money if you plan on using 3" materials. No getting around that... The 2600 has the stand and the 3" roller included...so again something to think about if your goal is to make $$$$ *The print head is expensive!!!!! You can find it for $350-$400. Don't buy the super cheap ones on Amazon as they often will clog and you will be out $250 and still have to buy a new print head. Just buy the good one....ask me how I know? It tinks to pay that much, but again it is Canon and all of the print heads are expensive. The larger printers often have TWO print heads which gets really expensive if your on a budget. Print heads are just a cost of doing business! They will last about a year normally....some times longer(sometimes shorter) if they don't clog. The inks frominkowl do not clog the printheads like canon wants you to believe. These printers like to have ink moving through them at least once a week...keeps the heads clear...so make sure you do a basic militance print each week or two. Also do a head clean once a month...yes it uses up some ink but not an issue if you are refilling your own inks. I have a profile print set up to print a 3" wide x 20" image as a test print to keep the heads active. IF you turn it off and don't use the printer for 1-2 months you will have an error telling you to replace the printhead...bummer and expensive...and not a lot you can do but spend the $400. Print heads going bad are again just the cost of doing business. I try to keep an extra new one around, make s life easier when it goes down. So I hope this helps you some. The take away is that the tm-240 is a good printer for light work. If you are a professional and need to make money in your business, invest in the $3k in a canon 2600 printer. Skip the tm-340 as it is a waste of a $1000 for not much more.

Scans NOT with Mac

I'm thoroughly bummed that I spent as much money as I did on the scanner and it does NOT work for Mac. Buyer beware... Printer works fine, but not scanner. In this day and age? What a disappointment.

Is the Canon imagePrograf TM-240 printer suitable ...

Is the Canon imagePrograf TM-240 printer suitable for professional photo printing?
Asked by: Ty
(Before I answer I want you to know that I run a poster printing business from home and have owned a few fancy printers, as well as had many vendors print for me.) The short answer is- YES. You CAN use this for professional photo printing. Are there printers that are even better? Yes and you'll pay 3X- 4X more for those printers. This printer has 3 colors and 2 Blacks. A fancier printer has even more color channels. In my opinion- this is good enough. This my friends, is the Toyota Camry of printers. It can do pretty much anything well. - Great looking photos? Check. - Pigment ink for longevity? Check. - Print on really thick Photo paper? Check. A normal human will be impressed by what this printer produces. A printing enthusiast may see room for improvement. Now, here's Canon's Marketing in play... TM series is advertised as a Plotter printer only (for construction sites) and Canon doesn't let on to everything it can really do. Why? Because Canon sells a "Pro Photo Printer" That costs 3-4X as much. How will they ever sell that? Downsides: - TM series is truly intended to print mainly from ROLL paper. If you need to print a lot of pre-cut sheets, look elsewhere. This printer tray can only load ONE sheet at a time. That's not fun if you need to print ten 11x17 sheet papers. - This can do borderless, but ONLY on roll paper. Need borderless on single sheets? Look elsewhere. - Just buy the stand for $300, don't torture yourself. - The $999 model can only hold a 55ML cartridge. Thats really small for large printing. Canon intends to make its money off of you in inks. One set is $250. My recommendations? - If you need an occasional wide format printer- go for it. This printer works great if you have another printer for smaller, high volume prints. - If you need to print 24x36 20 times a week, spring for the TM-250, which has MUCH larger ink cartridges, you save $600 on the first refill- investment will pay for itself by the second refill. If you need something that can do roll AND single sheet printing well, buy another printer. Some research: Here's an educational video link about this "TM" series of printer showcasing photos it can produce. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2TWXPIONbg&t=834s
