Miller DS Series Video Head Overview

The Miller DS-20 Fluid Head (75mm Ball Base) delivers the level of quality that is needed for professional ENG and corporate production. Features a dynamic fluid drag system providing consistent control across all temperature ranges and through a wide range of settings. It also offers an integrated counterbalance system combined with a sliding balance plate for a wide tilt angle, as well as a quick release and automatic locking system, for quick setup and disengagement of your camera.

Multi-Step Pan & Tilt Fluid Drag System
The DS-20 fluid head incorporates Miller's Dynamic Fluid Drag system ensuring smooth, consistent fluid drag control across all temperature ranges and through a wide range of light and heavy settings. By being independent of payload weight, the dynamic system ensures smooth "starts" and dead "stops" for precise framing without any backlash. The system is fully sealed within sub-assemblies for a leak-proof, low maintenance life.
Preset Counterbalancing
The DS-20 uses a special designed counterbalanced system, to neutralize the effect of payloads and their centers of gravity. The built-in preset counterbalance system combined with a 60mm sliding camera platform optimizes tilt control in the intended capacity range. Allowing a +90/-70° angle tilt without worrying that the camera will topple.
Quick Release Camera Platform
Fitted with a precision, quick release camera platform that incorporates a sliding balance plate for fine tune payload balancing. The self-engaging action of the camera plate ensures rapid camera attachment in the field, while the built-in safety lock guarantees camera safety during setup and pull-down.
Safe at any temperature
Pressure or temperature does not influence the damping system; it has an operating range from -40°F to +149°F, and works without friction. Shoot wherever you want, from torrid heat to cold climates.
Built-in bubble for horizontal leveling
Load capacity of 22 lb

Miller DS Series Video Head Reviews

Wonderful fluid heads

Rated 5 out of 5

After 12 wonderful years of being a workhorse, one of my DS-20 fluid heads broke this week. The central metal support that allows fluid tilt had broken off from one side. The metal of the tube cracked and broke off as if it had crumbled. This prevents it from engaging the fluid core and now tilts wildly... so I have to lock it. I noticed there was no bolt on that side of the head where it broke, but there are threads. Maybe a bolt would prevent the stress break. (I had a clutch rod on a car break like this.. the mechanic said, That shouldn't happen. I agreed.) These are the best fluid heads we've ever used. Totally spoiled. I just wish it were easier to get a repair now that I need it. If I can find a bolt the right size, I might be able to rig it. Still gets 5 stars! 12 years without any fuss. These are such a joy to use.

This thing is awesome! It is definitely worth the extra money as opposed to the moderately priced heads out there. Feels exceptionally well-built. I expect many years of use out of it. The tilt and drag are as smooth as can be. So far I've not even used any of the drag and it's still smoother than my old head. Highly recommend.

question

What is the minimum camera weight for effective counterbalance? I read that you need at least 10 pounds for this video head to balance properly. My rig is 9 pounds.
Asked by: William
According to Miller the payload range of the DS-20 is 5.0-10.0kg (11.0-22.0lbs) You would have to have 2 more lbs. Otherwise you will be fighting the head as you move.
