Although I've used this successfully for scanning a decent amount of 4x5 negs, its pretty frustrating for the high price tag. The micro etched acrylic shouldn't be used as it scratches easily thus needing extra retouching of negatives. Also the tolerance of the holder is poor - it shifts around on the lightbox which makes framing all over the place when camera scanning. I'm already having to source new ANR glass as mine is pretty much a write off after about 6 months of careful, light use.

Does frosted appearance of the etched acrylic cause any loss of clarity of the negative compared to using ANR glass?

The Negative Supply Basic 4 x 5" Sheet Film Scanning Kit (Micro-Etched Acrylic) (B&H# NEB45HLDRA) is also an anti Newton ring material. Both ANR glass and micro etched acrylic cause some diffusion. The degree of that diffusion depends on the particular ANR glass and micro etched acrylic involved; No universal comparison is possible. Using glass with mineral oil (or similar) between the negative and the glass on both sides (but not using ANR glass nor micro etched acrylic) would also work to prevent Newton rings, but most people do not want oily negatives. Such is the trade-off between preventing Newton rings and preserving the clarity of the image.
