Sony C-80 Unidirectional Studio Condenser Microphone

The C-80 from Sony is a condenser microphone designed to deliver professional-quality vocal recordings with a powerful and rich midrange along with a hint of added presence to cut through the mix. The mic’s dual-capsule design helps to reduce proximity effect and provide a consistent-sounding response, even if the vocalist moves slightly closer or further away from the mic during a take.

Great care has been taken to ensure that the mic provides sonic character and little else. The two-part metallic construction is based on the highly regarded C-800G and C-100 models and prevents acoustic vibrations, helping to keep inherent noise and unwanted sonic artifacts out of your recordings.

The large-diaphragm condenser element yields a true frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz, with a dynamic range of more than 125.5 dB. The C-80 plays quite nicely, even with loud singers, as the capsule offers a -10 dB pad and can handle SPLs up to 138 dB. A high-pass filter is also on board to help reduce low-end rumbles and other unwanted low-end frequencies, while a suspension shockmount is included to isolate the mic from vibrations and handling noise. A carrying case is also supplied for storage and transport.

Dual-Diaphragm Design
At the core of the C-80's excellent sonic character is the dual-diaphragm microphone element, which helps to minimize proximity effects for sonically consistent recordings. In addition, the cardioid polar pattern focuses audio capture at the area around the mic, reducing unwanted sound from the rear and sides.
Exceptional Signal Response
The large-diaphragm condenser element yields a true frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz with a dynamic range of more than 125.5 dB. The result is a flat-frequency response that maintains detail with low signals and transients. With a high sensitivity of -30 dB/Pa, the C-80 microphone can capture subtle nuances at high frequencies with low noise levels and minimum distortion.
Aluminum Body
The C-80 microphone incorporates a two-part aluminum body that helps to prevent acoustic vibration from reaching the microphone capsule, resulting in clarity of sonic reproduction.

Sony MDR-7506 Headphones

The MDR-7506 is a staple within the recording, film and live arenas. Due to its low impedance and closed-ear design, these headphones do an outstanding job of cutting down background noise while providing plenty of volume in the studio or in the field. Additionally, the closed design helps eliminate headphone bleed when overdubbing in the studio.

The MDR-7506 is an over-ear design and is ideal for use with MIDI workstations, camcorders, or other equipment with less than powerful headphone amplification. The headphone has a foldable design, making it convenient to store or transport, and its coiled cable allows it to stretch and spring back into place whenever you need a bit more reach.

Auray RF-CM-S Reflection Filter (Silver)

The silver RF-CM-S Reflection Filter from Auray is the perfect solution for recording vocalists or voice over artists in less than stellar acoustic spaces where room reflection would otherwise be recorded along with the vocal, making post processing and mixing more complicated. This might be in a home studio, an untreated rehearsal space, or a makeshift film dialogue replacement situation.

Housed in a deep and sturdy, semicircular perforated aluminum shell, the high density acoustic foam provides a reflection free environment for the microphone, while simultaneously attenuating any room noise. The resulting dry and clearer recordings can then be treated during mixing or film post processing without extraneous noises or unwanted reflections getting in the way.

The filter mounts onto a microphone stand, and front and rear sliding brackets easily allow you to adjust its height and depth for precise microphone placement. Standard 5/8"-27 threaded adapters fit most microphone stands, clips and shockmounts.

Compact solution for providing sound isolation for vocal or voice over recording in untreated spaces
High-density foam absorbs acoustic reflections and minimizes room ambience, isolating the microphone
Perforated aluminum shield diffuses and prevents sound that might reflect back to microphone, especially when recording loud vocalists
Sliding bracket makes it easy to mount the microphone in the ideal position inside the reflection filter
Rear adjustable bracket provides additional filter height adjustment to accommodate different vocalist heights
Adapters with industry-standard 5/8"-27 threaded studs and sockets are compatible with mic stands, shock mounts, and mic clips with a 5/8"-27 post.
Deep, semi-circular design ensures dry vocals while attenuating external noise

Auray PFMU-12 Universal Wire Mesh Pop Filter with 12" Gooseneck (Matte Black)

The matte black Auray PFMU-12 is a universal wire mesh pop filter offering sonically transparent control of plosives for podcasters, voiceover artists, narrators, and singers in home, project, and commercial recording studios. Its dual-layer wire mesh screen inhibits pops and distortion frequently caused by "p" and "b" sounds, yielding smoother vocal tracks that require less editing and processing in post-production. The screen also serves as a shield, preventing corrosion by keeping mouth-born moisture from collecting on your mic's capsule.

The PFMU-12's rectangular wraparound design imparts a pleasing visual aesthetic, and delivers consistent performance for various microphone styles and source-to-mic angles. The flexible 12" gooseneck ensures accurate placement and quick adjustment, even when swapping out microphones. Attachment and removal of the PFMU-12 is simple and fast via the durable metal C-clamp and convenient thumbscrew. A rubber grommet on the thumbscrew protects your mic stand's finish from scratches.

Inhibits Problematic Plosives
In every recording of dialog or vocals, there are bound to be problematic plosives—"p" and "b" sounds that can cause distortion and distracting pops from bursts of air hitting the diaphragm of your microphone's capsule. This dual-layer wire mesh screen acts as a sonically transparent barrier, inhibiting the pops without compromising frequency response.
Effective Wraparound Design
Microphones come in a variety of shapes and styles, and the PFMU-12 is designed to accommodate all sorts. Its wraparound construction provides consistent protection for an array of capsule sizes, as well as reliable performance even if the performer shifts their position off-axis. Additionally, whereas traditional pop filters are round and glossy, the PFMU-12 brings an element of visual interest thanks to its rectangular shape and matte black finish.
Enhanced Voice Recording Quality
Whether you're podcasting, recording voiceovers, or tracking singers, effective control of plosives yields improvements in quality. By preventing plosives, the PFMU-12 allows the performer to get closer to the mic; the added detail and low-frequency presence resulting from this proximity are often beneficial for vocal tonality and impact.
Protects Capsule from Moisture
In addition to preventing plosives, the PFMU-12 shields your microphone's sensitive diaphragm against mouth-born moisture, which can cause corrosion and deteriorate sonic performance.
Simple Attachment & Removal
For efficient and stable positioning, the PFMU-12 features a thumbscrew fastener and a durable metal C-clamp with a maximum clamp width of 0.8 inches—wide enough to fit most mic stands or booms. A rubber grommet is utilized to protect your stand from scratches.

Sony C-80 Reviews

Tears of Joy

I finally made the leap to the MixPre3. It was time for a comparably, high-quality studio mic to pair with it. First, there is no hype surrounding this mic. The reviews are accurate. The sound is full and beautiful and the self noise virtually non-existent. However, to compare the C-80 to the D1 shotgun mic and my Antelope Edge (if you can), I had to turn the gain way down on the C-80 to record the same scenarios; apparently, the C-80 is much more sensitive than other mics. This of course means you can keep the gain down which keeps the self-noise down. You could spend A LOT more money for a studio microphone. For the money, this is a superior studio mic. If you are on a budget, pairing the C-80 to a high-quality sound recorder is better bang for buck (IMHO) than going with a more expensive mic and a cheaper recorder. As for a studio mic, unless I decide I need a matched pair, I may never need another. Which brings me to another point. The sound on this mic is so beautiful, that, naturally, it leaves me daydreaming about what a mic like this could do in the field. But alas, the Sony C80 is a studio mic and is not built for field work. And so, here is my only request: Sony, at this price point, you are dealing with Indie creators here. We think out of the box because we have to get the job done on pennies for dollars. That means everything we invest in has to do double or triple duty. PLEASE: make another version of this mic (even if it is a hundred or two more), but make it weatherproof so we can take it out of the studio and get it into the field!! You might be amazed where a mic like that would go.

Sounds very rich

Thanks B&H for the unexpected next day shipping. The mic came in packaged well. Delivered faster than expected I used the mic, on first listen to the raw audio I wasn't really noticing the difference from my old mic, then I processed the audio a bit and I noticed how flat my old mic sounded and how round, full, and crisp the Sony C-80 sounded. I'm satisfied, If I ever had a reason to I would buy another, but I'd likely just get a c-100 next or maybe if things go well a C-800G
