Torso Electronics S-4 Overview

Designed to capture and transform sounds, the Torso Electronics S4 is a stereo granular sampler and performance instrument designed for sonic architects, experimental producers, and live performers. Made for sonic explorers, the S-4 has four parallel stereo tracks, each with an audio engine featuring a chain of audio devices including samplers, live granular processing, morphing resonators, and a range of audio effects. Torso Electronics S-4 Reviews

Pretty cool

I bought the s4 after demoing it at a friends who really enjoyed it. I loved the live recording buffers and effects, and how seamlessly it connected to Ableton. Build quality was a little less than expected for a $1000 piece of gear, one of the knobs was a little “sticky” when rotating it at a certain point, which kind of pulled me out of the zone when recording. Overall I would suggest it, especially if you’re into the resonant filter sound it seems to gravitate towards.

Half Baked & Overpriced

Was really excited about the idea of this device for several months leading up to the preorder I placed. It took about a month and a half to receive the unit (expected as it was a preorder). Getting closer to when I was expecting mine to arrive, some more reviews appeared online which lowered my expectations about the device. Finally getting the device in hand, the first thing I noticed is that it didn't feel like a $900 unit. It's light, plastic, and overall felt cheap. The buttons and knobs were very underwhelming, stiff knobs and flimsy buttons. The experience of the unit's software interface/workflow (which is way more important than the physical flaw with the unit) were really lacking. At the time when I ordered this, there weren't a ton of videos showcasing the unit, but of the ones I saw, I expected it to really inspire some creativity with a unique workflow. Many features are buggy, and some are completely unimplemented, only showing a coming soon message on screen when you press a face button. My device came with the latest firmware available at the time (1.0.4), so your milage may very if you try a newer firmware. Overall quite disappointed to spend $900 on a flimsy piece of gear with only a fraction of the advertised features available. I sold the device off immediately.
