SmallHD Camera Control Kit Reviews
Works great but one glitch
Works great, like having a dedicated RED monitor. Only glitch is that through the USB/serial port there is a few second delay for the record indication to light up. Small HD told me its due to REDs older usb connection. The work around is to add a SDI overlay and you can add a record indicator which shows up immediately.
Essential piece of kit
I often run my Alexa Mini solo, and having this installed on my SmallHD Cine 7 allows me to get rid of the original Arri viewfinder/monitor and related rods/mounts. The weight savings are significant - it definitely makes handheld shooting easier. And even when the camera is locked-off, being able to look at my monitor and change settings with the touchscreen makes things effortless. I was on the fence about it: My two concerns were how responsive the screen would be, and if I would have to connect/reconnect after each powerdown. I shouldn't have worried. The screen is super responsive and navigation/operation is as easy as SmallHD's PageOS. And once the control kit is set up, it reconnects automatically every time I power up the camera without me having to do anything. All in all, an expensive upgrade, but the time and weight savings are well worth it.
