Intuitive Instruments EXQUIS Overview

Produce, perform, and learn music with the Intuitive Instruments Exquis, an innovative musical instrument designed to redefine the art of composition. Accompanied by a user-friendly app, Exquis simplifies the song-creation process, offering a seamless workflow to compose full tracks quickly. Its compatibility with a broad range of software and hardware makes it a versatile tool for musicians of all skill levels. This intuitive USB-C powered controller features expressive and sensitive keys that cater to both precision and dynamic play.

The instrument leverages MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) for nuanced control, allowing each note to be shaped individually. With its expressive keys and ergonomic harmony layout, you can create melodies and chords effortlessly. Exquis is compatible with all MIDI synthesizers, modular synthesizers, and music software. It is optimized for its dedicated app, which provides easy access to sound control, harmony, and melody as well as providing an efficient workflow for both on stage or in the studio.

  • The hexagonal matrix of keys puts notes that sound good together (thirds) next to one another: chords are built with ergonomic shapes, easy to play, learn, and understand.
  • The backlit keys allow the player to display any musical scale (or any custom map), guiding the player on the right path. More than 350 scales are available!
  • The keys are independently velocity, pressure, and inclination-sensitive (MIDI Polyphonic Expression protocol); the silicone of the keys is both firm enough to play percussion and short notes with precision, and soft enough to modulate long notes with sensitivity.
  • The unique creative workflow (buttons on the keyboard + app) allows anyone to create a song in rhythm within minutes and very simple gestures: picking a sound, recording loops, and composing songs live or programming them in advance.

Intuitive Instruments EXQUIS Reviews

Horrible for my needs, your outcome might vary....

I bought one to use with my Erica Steampipe and it was horrible. The keypads were so unresponsive even after adjusting the sensitivity in the App. It would be hit or miss if it played properly, often not triggering the Steampipe at all. Sometimes it would actually alter the sound of the Preset coming out of the Steampipe and not in a good way. You can forget about playing chords with it, it rarely works. Just to be sure it wasn’t just a Steampipe compatibility issue I tried it with my ASM HydraSynth Desktop Synth and it was just as bad. I checked some online forums and read similar comments from too many others. I guess for some users it works great but not for many. Anyway I returned it after 2 days, just not worth the money, oh and the documentation was horrible and no User Guide for the App which was not intuitive at all. Don’t waste your time or money.

An affordable, versatile MPE MIDI Controller

I had been considering getting a Linnstrument. I concluded; too bulky and too expensive. The Exquis very compact but still 61 notes is affordable and versatile. 61 notes is more than plenty for solo performance on it or as an addition to my keyboard setup. I also like the fact that the company seems to have good support with their own apps and sounds. The buttons feel good. It also comes with 2 1/8 to 5 din pin midi cables, which means I can drive my keyboards or sound modules directly from the Exquis. It's a cool gadget.

Can you run this on Abelton & winxp?
Asked by: Christian
The Intuitive Instruments Exquis 61-Key MPE MIDI Controller (BH # INTEXQ) will work with Ableton by activating the MPE button within the DAW. If your Ableton software is Windows XP-compatible, then the setup should work.
