Pentax PF-85EDA 85mm Spotting Scope (Angled Viewing)

The large objective lens of the Pentax PF-85EDA 85mm Spotting Scope delivers bright, sharp images for everything from birding to stargazing. Extra-low dispersion glass lens elements with multiple full antireflective coatings minimize aberrations while maximizing light transmission, increasing color fidelity and contrast, and improving clarity and resolution. This model is offered without an eyepiece, but accepts standard 1.25" telescope eyepieces.

Optimized for your viewing comfort, the eyepiece holder is set at a 45° angle to the body and the tripod mount collar allows the body to rotate. These two features allow you to precisely place the eyepiece in a comfortable position that requires the least amount of head movement during use whether you are standing, sitting, or lying prone. An objective lens shade is built into the front bell, which further enhances image contrast and clarity by keeping glare off the lens.

Optical Performance
  • 85mm objective lens produces a bright and clear field of view
  • Collet-style press-fit eyepiece holder holds the eyepiece firmly in place and optically centered
  • High-resolution extra-low dispersion (ED) glass elements deliver sharp, high-resolution images with minimal chromatic aberrations
  • Multilayer coatings on lenses maximize light transmission to produce accurate color fidelity with improved contrast and clarity
  • 5-element/4-group lens configuration optimizes image quality by reducing lens-edge distortion
Use and Handling
  • Eyepiece holder is set at a 45° angle to the body, placing the user's head in a comfortable viewing position whether they are standing, sitting, or lying prone
  • Rotating 1/4"-20 tripod collar allows the user to adjust the orientation of the eyepiece holder to the tripod head to achieve optimum viewing comfort
  • Built-in lens shade cuts excessive light from causing lens flares on the objective and helps to prevent rain and other weather elements from interfering with view
  • Accepts all standard 1.25" telescope eyepieces, allowing a wide variety of fixed and zoom options
Construction Details
  • Dust-shielding glass element in the eyepiece receptacle maintains JIS Class7 waterproof rating
  • Submersible to 3 feet deep, but not intended for underwater use
  • Filled with nitrogen gas to prevent internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature changes

Pentax PF-85EDA Reviews

Disappointed

The Pentax PF-85EDA has received some very good reviews in the past – so I was looking forward to the shipment from B&H. It came in a large box, well fitted in the shipping envelope as well as the manufacturer’s packaging. First impression: nice shape, solid but still light weight. I really like the focuser, very smooth with enough resistance to allow for accurate positioning, but not so much the rubber coating, it feels tacky. The 8-24mm Pentax eyepiece is massive, but the scope+eyepiece combo is well balanced. Optical performance The optical design, f5.6/480mm, allows for magnifications of 20-60x with the zoom eyepiece. Also tried a few other Tele Vue eyepieces 19mm PAN, 12mm Nagler T2, etc. Clearly, Pentax designed the scope to be used with the Pentax eyepiece series. The zoom has a sweat spot at 12mm, comparing well to the Nagler (although the Nagler was a bit sharper). A test pattern confirmed the pincushion distortion (minimum at ~12mm) and severe field curvature towards the edges. The field curvature manifests itself in the field through distortion of the background. A makeshift aperture showed improvement in focusing but obviously comes at the cost of aperture loss. The star test: Aldebaran, Venus, Polaris etc. Unfortunately, the scope has poor contrast, and worse, the coma is severe, confirming the observations made during the day. This lens system does not produce a flat field and cannot be compensated for by the eyepiece. Stopping down is not a solution. Overall, a disappointing performance – and so this unit is going back to B&H. PS. The replacement unit provided by B&H showed the same optical (non)performance.

The Pentax PF85EDA is a stunner.

I'm a birder and I've used this scope's predecessor - the PF80EDA - for more than 10 years. I've always been impressed with that scope's optical performance - especially with the fixed focal length XW eyepieces (I own XW10, XW14, and XW20). So, when the new PF85EDA was released, I was excited to see how it stacked up. Interestingly, online reviews have been few and far between. So, I decided to just take the plunge and buy one. Now that I’ve had some field time with it, this is my review. I wasn't sure what to expect from this completely redesigned instrument. But the verdict is a resounding WOW! Sharpness and clarity are elite. Chromatic aberration is essentially non-existent. Fields of view are expansive for each eyepiece’s magnification. I will keep it paired with the XW14 eyepiece (37x) for most birding applications, but when extra punch is needed for those distant sea ducks or shorebirds, the XW10 is remarkably improved on this new PF85EDA. It's super sharp at 50x. The only mistake Pentax made was the choice to use a barrel focus wheel. It functions fine, but I've always preferred a top-mounted focus knob - but that's mostly personal preference. For the price, there's no better scope on the market than this PF85EDA. I recently set it up at a local reservoir next to a friend's Vortex Razor HD 85mm. At comparable magnifications, the Pentax was clearly sharper and respective fields of view were wider. Don't sleep on this product. I would think twice before you drop $4000-5000 on a European scope when this one will stand toe-to-toe, optically, for less than half the price (even if you buy three eyepieces). Very well done, Pentax.

You suggest 86 mm filter as an accessories. Are you sure this spotting scope can accept any front filter?
