Ilford ID-11 Overview

Ilford ID-11 Film Developer is for use where fine grain negatives are required without a loss of emulsion speed.

ID-11 ensures the best balance of fine grain, sharpness, and tonal rendition, and it can be used with all formats of film, producing negatives that allow a high degree of enlargement.

ID-11 is supplied as a powder and shows exceptional consistency in performance throughout its working life. ID-11 is a Metol-Hydroquinone borax type of developer.

The developer is made as a stock solution for normal tank or tray use, and it can be further diluted 1+1 or 1+3 for users who prefer longer development times, a higher degree of sharpness, and are willing to use ID-11 on a "one-shot" basis.

Development time in tanks (68°F/20°C) for Ilford Delta 100 35mm film: Stock solution = 7 min. Diluted 1+1 = 10 min. Diluted 1+3 = 15.5 min.
For Ilford Delta 400 35mm film (at 400 exposure): Stock solution = 7 min. Diluted 1+1 = 10.5 min. Diluted 1+3 = 18 min.
One liter of working strength stock solution (not diluted) will process 10 rolls of 35mm/120 film. Diluted 1+1 it will process up to 5 rolls of 35/120 film.
Storage time for Unopened full bottle ID-11 Stock solution is 6 months. For half full bottles of stock solution storage time is 1 month. If stock is diluted it can only be used as a "one-shot" developer and should not be stored.

Ilford ID-11 Reviews

Ilford ID-11 Is Very Good

I Think I Wrote One Of These For This Developer Already, But I'll Do It Tonight. I Haven't Made The Rounds Of Film Developers, So I Can't Make A Bunch Of Comparisons. I Used D-76 Long, Long Ago, And I Used ID-11 Long Ago, And Then Again Recently. I Like It. I Was Using Caffinol Because I Was Trying To Keep Costs Down On Film Use, But I Wasn't Happy With The Caffinol So I Switched To Ilford ID-11 And Got A Noticeable Difference. I Like It Very Much. I Use A Standard Method Of Developing, As Per The Ilford Instructions. I Don't See Any Reason To Switch To Any Other Brand. Some People Like To Play The Field With Developers. As With Many Things, I Find Something I Like And Stick With It. I Still Keep In Mind Caffinol As An Alternative For When I Am Out Of ID-11, Such As Tonight. I Made A Change In My Agitation Method With The Caffinol. I Used The Same Method I Used With ID-11, And I Think It Might Be Better Than The Way I Was Doing It With Caffinol. The Film Is Still Hanging So I Don't Know Yet, But At First Impression, I Think It Is Ok. The Ilford Method Is Probably Better, Although The Time Needs To Be Increased A Minute Or So With Caffinol--less Agitation. Anyway, I Like ID-11 And Recommend It.

I’ve been using ID-11 for about 14 years now. Mostly with HP5 in 120 and 35mm. I use it 1:1 one-shot. The developer provides the best balance of sharpness, shadow detail and graininess. Ilford just recently repackaged the developer and it was out of stocks for months. I’ve just mixed up a batch of the newer repackaged ID-11 and happy to find it works same as it always has! I highly recommend this developer!
