A Lightweight Travel Lock

Well, don't throw away your old locks and don't lose those keys (or combinations), because they aren't making locks like they used to. On the other hand, a lightweight travel lock that is strong enough to be called a lock and yet not so heavy that it pulls on and wears down your luggage eyelets couldn't be found twenty and thirty years ago, so it's another glass half-empty -vs- half full conundrum. I like the lock. I like its smoothness of operation. I REALLY like the four-dial combination. I don't know what the material is, but it is VERY lightweight compared to the solid steel and brass locks of yesteryear, and I could live with that as a tradeoff to have the benefits of a lightweight lock, which I also like. However, I DON'T like the fact that when you go to depress the open end of the shackle down into the hole in the top of the lock, that this end of the shackle only depresses into the lock body NO MORE THAN a quarter of an inch. A quarter of an inch and that little ring of metal protruding above the top of the lock is all that is keeping this lock locked. It doesn't take much of an imagination to guess that a solid hit from something unforgiving like a steel luggage rack (or a pirate's hammer) could lay the lock open. Then again, as they say, locks don't stop the real thieves; they only keep honest people honest. Still, a little more shackle down into the body of the lock would certainly give the valuables the lock is supposed to be protecting a bit more of a fighting chance. I would think you would need at least a solid half inch to pass a pirate's hammer test. In short, this is a lock that is good enough to slow down an opportunist: someone that might try to reach into a zippered bag that is loosely attended, such as on a bag you put under the seat in front of you, or one that goes in the carry-on overhead. However, this lock is not good enough (by itself) to expect a certainty of protection on something that will then be unattended -- such as a bag or gear case you would check in and walk away from, and then pick back up at baggage claim later. At the very least, if your luggage or gear case has places for more than one lock, then have at least two of these installed. It's unlikely that a hit that lays open one lock will happen to both--unless it was a deliberate hit from a pirate. But, if you are missing both locks, at least then you will know it WAS a pirate--or someone who is well on their way to looking like one.

Got this to replace my other TSA approved lock that was much thinner. This lock is VERY sturdy and thick, but still fits a large monitor pelican case.   Love that it has 4 number vs 3, like most locks. The appearance and feel of it ensure no one will try to mess with it. Think this will definitely protect expensive gear. Also, liked that it was very easy to set the combination. Highly recommend! [I have received this product in exchange for my honest review.]
