Ricoh GR IIIx HDF Overview

Compact Design and Advanced Expressiveness
Slightly but significantly different from the standard GR IIIx model, the Ricoh GR IIIx HDF is a specialized version of the advanced compact camera, featuring a built-in Highlight Diffusion Filter that renders highlights with a diffused, soft, and blurred effect for a more dreamlike and ethereal image quality.

This selectable filter replaces the ND filter from the standard edition of the camera and leaves the rest of the camera nearly the same, including the 40mm-equivalent lens, 24.2MP APS-C sensor, hybrid AF system, Shake Reduction, and the compact, pocketable design that makes this one of the ultimate everyday carry and street photography cameras.
HDF Distinctions
  • Built-In HDF diffuses highlights for a softer, blurred effect that renders images with a more dreamlike and nostalgic quality.
  • HDF can be turned on and off via a single button—the rear Fn button has "HDF" printed near it and is configured to control this filter. The button can be reassigned, though, and the HDF function can be programmed to other controls if desired.
  • Aside from the filter itself, the HDF camera also features a unique silver-colored shutter release button that is visually distinct from standard GR III-series cameras.
New 40mm-Equivalent GR Lens
  • Changing from the typical 28mm-equivalent lens of the past several generations of GR cameras, the GR IIIx HDF features a newly designed 26.1mm f/2.8 prime lens; equivalent to a 40mm lens on a full-frame camera.
  • Wide-normal field of view is slightly narrower than the wide-angle 28mm of the standard GR III, offering a bit more visual compression for making more selective compositions.
  • Newly developed lens for the GR system uses high refractive index and low dispersion glasses, along with aspherical elements, to render scenes with a high degree of sharpness and color accuracy.
  • Maximum aperture of f/2.8 helps maintain the overall sleek and lightweight design while also remaining bright enough for photographing in a variety of lighting conditions.
  • Dedicated Macro mode with a distinct close-up focusing range suits working with subjects within a 4.7" to 9.4" working range.
  • Built-in crop modes simulate the fields of view of 50mm and 71mm lenses, offering an even narrower field of view without needing to change lenses.
24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and GR Engine 6
  • The large 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor pairs with a new GR Engine 6 to produce high-resolution 14-bit DNG or JPEG stills with impressive tonality, natural color rendering, and high sensitivity from ISO 100-102400.
  • A 3-axis 4-step Shake Reduction System helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting at slower shutter speeds, benefitting working in low-light conditions.
  • Sensor has an anti-aliasing (AA) filter-less design, which maximizes sharpness and resolution in most shooting circumstances. However, for certain circumstances, like when photographing some fabrics and other high-frequency patterns and colors, the Shake Reduction mechanism can simulate the effects of an AA filter.
  • Image Control function offers 11 distinct modes to apply preset looks to a scene and the saturation, contrast, hue, and other creative parameters of each mode can be adjusted to suit the desired effect.
  • Pre-program up to three custom white balance presets for quick switching between your chosen settings.
  • Integrated multi-exposure mode with no frame limit for compositing unlimited sequential exposures in-camera.
  • Multi-Segment, Center-Weighted, and Spot metering options are available along with a Highlight-Weighted options that prioritizes keeping highlight values within the dynamic range and allowing shadows to become darker and moodier.
  • In addition to stills shooting, the GR IIIx is also capable of recording Full HD 1080 video at 60p, 30p, and 24p frame rates.
Hybrid AF System
  • Hybrid AF system combines a contrast-type AF mechanism with a phase-detection-type AF mechanism ensuring high-speed focusing operation.
  • During autofocus shooting, this AF system detects the subject's face or eye with precision, focuses on it, and indicates the in-focus position on the LCD display using the AF frame. When the camera detects multiple faces, it automatically distinguishes the main subject from secondary ones and indicates this on the focus frame.
  • Full Press Snap function lets you override the AF in an instant by fully depressing the shutter button and having the lens immediately focus at a preset distance. This unique shooting and focusing function is perfect for street photography and eliminates any lag times for decisive moment-type shooting.
  • Full Press Snap can also be accessed by touching the rear LCD monitor.
  • Zone-Select AF allows choosing any zone within the 3 x 3 focusing area and having the AF system automatically focus on the correct subject within this specific region.
Compact and Connected Design
  • The hallmark feature of the GR-series has been its compact, pocketable size while still retaining a large image sensor and bright prime lens.
  • Integrated 3.0" 1.037m-dot LCD features a capacitive touchscreen design for intuitive, familiar operation during shooting, playback, and menu navigation.
  • Magnesium alloy body design is lightweight, durable, and ideal for everyday carry.
  • The rear layout of the camera prioritizes a large, comfortable thumb grip along with easily accessible physical dials.
  • The ADJ lever, FN button, and Touch AF operations can be programmed to handle specific assignable functions for more personalized control.
  • Start-up time is just 0.8 seconds, and Hybrid AF performance is quick for more seamless operation.
  • Single SD memory card slot and there is 2GB of built-in memory (enough to record approximately 140 JPEG images) in case of emergencies.
  • Integrated Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi afford wireless connectivity between the camera and a paired mobile device and allows you to embed location info within your files as well as transfer files to your mobile device, even when the camera is turned off.
  • Included DB-110 rechargeable lithium-ion battery offers approximately 200 shots per charge.USB-C port allows you to transfer files or recharge the battery in-camera.

Ricoh GR IIIx HDF Reviews

Camera Unique Operations

By Rob
Rated 5 out of 5

Happy. Be aware camera “operations” are unique. When you tweak formulas to store in U1, U2, U3… that some of the most recently saved customizations will spill into the basic modes: Av, Tv, P, M. I have come to learn these settings are NOT default permanent settings. I was confused because that was my assumption so I wondered why they all stayed black and white after finishing a recipe for U3 as a high contrast B&W. Essentially there is no default Av, Tv, P, or M. This means I use my custome U1, U2, and U3 as my go-to program modes. Took me a while to figure this out. As others have noted, autofocus is not the greatest. But I don’t care because the image quality is spectacular when you get the shot.

Great camera!

I added the Ricoh GR IIIx HDF to my stable and am very happy. I already had the Sony RX100 vii and Fuji X100 VI, but thought I would get the GR, too. It is the most pocketable, but having the small package with an APS sensor is excellent. I really enjoy the built in highlight diffusion filter mostly for light blooming at night. The 40mm equivalent focal length is also excellent. It compliments all my cameras and fills a nice spot. I highly recommend this one, especially before they are all gone.
