Oben GH3W-15 3-Way Geared Head

The GH3W-15 3-Way Geared Head from Oben provides three independent gear movements with fine-tune precision for pinpoint aim. Integrated bubble levels assure perfect alignment with the horizon, regardless of the camera's vertical or horizontal orientation. When the gears are engaged, the camera is locked into place and won't shift out of position, which is a common problem with traditional ball heads. This head is also ideal for applications where micro camera adjustments are a must, like close-ups, macro, and product photography.

The GH3W-15 has an integrated Arca-type quick release set and is compatible with plates that have safety screws. It includes a QR-20 quick release plate with a standard 1/4"-20 camera screw and rubberized traction pads.

Three-Axis Movement
The three-axis adjustment available with the Oben GH3W-15 head is perfect for architecture, landscape, and product shoots that require precise camera positioning. Ensure the subject fits perfectly in the picture frame by tweaking the pan and the front and lateral tilts in miniscule increments.
Quick Lock System
Each knob features a spring-loaded quick lock, which disengages the gears in order to rapidly tilt or rotate the camera to the desired position. Once the general movement of the camera is completed, use the precision-geared adjustment knobs to fine-tune its position.
Large Adjustment Knobs
The large adjustment knobs make it easy to fine-tune the camera's aim. Gripping a large knob means increased control over how precisely it can be turned.
Three Bubble Levels
It's not always possible to shoot on a perfectly level surface, especially when shooting architecture on the side of a hill or even a back yard. Three integrated bubble levels ensure the fine-tuning adjustment knobs can perfectly align the camera with the horizon.

Heavy, solid, and stable. A couple of minutes to get the hang of, and then you may find yourself resolving to never use a ball head again. One star off for tolerances that are slightly sloppier than they could be, but at the price point, a very good head.

Picked this geared head up a month or so ago and finally got a chance to test it out on some shoots. I used it in some tabletop product shots. It was easy to use. I like the knob to allow for faster larger changes in each of the 3 directions separately, then it had the smaller dials to make minor adjustments to each. The combination worked well together to get the exact angle of the camera that I needed. The head felt locked in once set in place. I never felt like it shifted or creeped into a different position. That said, I only tried with moderate weight, nothing too heavy like a large medium format with old metal lens. Simple Canon mirrorless camera and a variety of prime lenses. I do recommend a solid tripod with it.
