Sirui KS-40 Overview

The KS-40 Low Gravity QR Ball Head with Panning Arca-Type Plate from Sirui has a load capacity of 55 lb and is precision machined from durable aluminum alloy. It is designed to lower the center of gravity for more stable movement and enhanced locking force. It features adjustable friction control to hold even heavy equipment stable. It has a panoramic base with a numbered scale and independent locking knob. Double notches make it simple to change camera orientation from horizontal to vertical.

The KS-40 incorporates an Arca-type quick release set with a quick release flip-lock system to mount or remove equipment. The large flip-lock lever offers rapid one-handed operation. The included KS-55P panning Arca-type plate allows 360° camera rotation regardless of head position or if the head's panning base is locked.

This thing is rock solid

This ball head is an incredible value for the price — solid and stable. While I have some doubts about its ability to handle setups over 40 lb in the long run, it easily supports my Sony A1 II + Sony 200–600 + on-camera monitor combo with no issues. It’s perfectly stable for still photography. For heavier combo, it is stable for now when it's new but I won't risk my equipments just for saving money on a tripod head. For smaller setups, like shooting portraits with the Tamron 35–150, you honestly don’t even need to lock it down. The friction adjustment alone holds it securely, and even during 10-second long exposures, there’s zero movement or shake. In this case, I prefer using friction for better control, and only locks it when I'm pretty sure I won't move for a while. If I had to nitpick, the spacing between the knobs feels a bit tight for my hands. The friction control knob could be slightly larger or have a longer throw — it’s not a dealbreaker, since you’ll likely set it once at the start of a session and leave it there. You definitely wouldn’t want to adjust it mid-shoot. Overall, a rock-solid, high-value ball head that performs far above its price range.

Very well made With ARCA style panning plate. Knobs are a bit close. But still very nice quality Smooth ball head & panning. I use mine with LensCoat Jr bag Great combination. Filled bag with cut up pipe insulation, adds zero weight and filled to be firm enough to stand up with Nikon 200-500 5.6 Zoom I highly recommend the combo.

Would an arca-type L bracket such as the 3 Legged Thing Arnie fit this ball head?

The Sirui KS-40 Low Gravity QR Ball Head with Panning Arca-Type Plate should work with most Arca-Swiss-style L plates. It has not been tested specifically with every L plate. But it is Arca-Swiss style.

No, the Sirui KS‐40 Low Gravity QR Ball Head’s Arca‐Swiss quick‐release clamp is not designed to be detached from the ball head as a separate piece to mount your own clamp.
