Thypoch Simera 28mm f/1.4 Reviews

This Lens makes me "Hyper Focused"

I purchased the Thypoch Simera 28mm f1.4 to challenge myself. It is my first manual lens since moving to digital decades ago. The lens has been permanently affixed to my Fujifilm X-E5 since I received it. The aperture ring clicks, and the focus ring operates smoothly. Images are excellent; sharp where they are supposed to be with a nice falloff to a pleasant bokeh. The only image problem I have experienced is a lens flare when shooting at night. My mistake, I could have avoided the issue if I had used the provided hood. Be prepared. This lens is long and heavy, reflecting its 1.4 aperture and build quality. The size and weight, once you get used to it, offer a sense of solid security. I ended up getting a grip for the X-E5, which with this lens, gives me a solid setup. Another quirk of the lens is Thypoch’s method of showing the focal range. Rather than using lines to show the focus range, Thypoch uses red dots on the barrel. Although stylish, the small markings can be difficult to see. I am still getting used to manual focusing and gauging depth-of-field. But after decades of working in auto, I have enjoyed the challenge and the responsibility of a manual lens. Admittedly, I have become “hyper-focused” on learning more about depth-of-field, zone focusing, etc. So, be prepared; you might find yourself going down the same rabbit hole. If you do, below is a table that helps me set “acceptable focus” distances using the aperture and focus ring distance markings.

I Bought This Lens On Sale At B&H F(or Nikon Z Mount) While Waiting For The Voigtlander 28/2 Apo Lanthar To Be Issued In Z Mount. I've Used It On Z6II, Z7II, And Z8 Cameras. The Lens Is Surprisingly Good. The Focus Scale Is Longer At Infinity Than Close Up--very Unusual. There Is Some Kind Of Cam Action That Takes Over The Focus When Passing About 1 Meter From The Infinity Direction. Unfortunately, The Focus Markings On My Copy Are Way Off, So I Made My Own Marks With A Paint Marker. Excellent Lens Fro Zone Focusing, Because Of The Long Focus Scale. The Lens Generates A Large Ghost-type Flare Across The Axis From Any Very Bright Light Source That's In-shot. Sharpness-wise, At The Outer Edges Of The 24x36 Frame At F/4, It Outperforms My Old Zeiss ZF 28/2. At F/5.6 It Is Absolutely Sharp Across The Frame All The Way To The Edges. Maintains Impression Of Good Sharpness Even At F/11. Good For Deep-focus Shots. Overall Contrast Is Lower Than Modern Nikon, Zeiss Or Voigtlander Lenses. Color Has A Warm Bias. I Wish It Focused Closer.

Does the Thypoch Simera 28mm f/1.4 for Nikon Z support the manual focus assist features one the ZF?
Asked by: Vicki
Since the Thypoch Simera 28mm f/1.4 for Nikon Z lacks communication pins, it does not support all manual focus assist features. The lens will still support things like Focus Peaking, but will not support focus confirmation.
