Godox Lantern Softbox for ML100B Reviews
Funky to open / Easy to install, does the job
Just a brief note to say that the small Godox lantern diffusers work well and fit neatly on the ML100R LEDs we have installed. This product takes the place of the lens, so if you intend to use them as a standard attachment, it's not worth investing in additional lenses. Once opened-up, these set and twist in the ML100R's mounting ring quite smoothly. But opening them is a bit of a trick. There is a center post with a ring on the end, surrounded by a series of flexible ribs. The ribs are so stiff that the only way I could get the lantern 'assembled' was to remove the black nylon sack and other packaging, hold the unit with two hands on the mounting ring from the back while seated, and put the nose on the floor between my feet. Keeping the tip of the nose from sliding out from under the unit, you have to apply sufficient, centered, downward force (seems like you might break something but you won't) to get the ribs to fold outward as you continue to push down. NOTE: For both lanterns we bought, I had to insert a finger and push out on a rib or two to get them to fold outward, vs collapse inward. You'll notice a series of large fabric velcro tabs around the base of the lantern, which I assume are used if the box gets torn or stained and needs to be replaced, but you don't need to touch or adjust those for to deploy the sphere...as tempting as they may seem. Once the ribs are all bending in the right direction, you can look down into the bottom center of the lantern and you'll see a hook, mounted to the inside of the nose. Your task is to push down and maneuver the center shaft ring to catch that hook. Once it's hooked, the lantern is ready to install, with a taught, ribbed circular shape that looks very much like the product photos.
Good enough for a lightweight set-up
They are a nice addition to the compatible Godox mini LED lights. They can be a little wonky to open up, but once you get the hang of it, it’s not bad. They are definitely highly portable, which is nice if you don’t want to lug around a lot of much more expensive and heavier equipment.
