Sennheiser ACCENTUM True Wireless Reviews

Barely acceptable, even at half price

I picked these up because the price was right and the reviews (generally around 3-4 stars) made it seem on par with what it cost. I would not pay the full $220 these are currently selling for. First, they are kind of painful to my ears and have a insecure fit with the stock tips, so I had to buy $25 aftermarket foam tips for them (which are better, but still not great). The day I got them they fell out of my ears and bounced into a 350 degree oven while making dinner, I've since figured out how to get a better fit, but it was not obvious when I bought them. Ergonomically they blow, really. The optical sensor on them that detects when they're in use has a terrible design flaw with a .3mm divot and sharp edge. When I put them into my ears that seemingly small edge scrapes like a knife edge against some highly sensitive skin. That is probably the single worse thing about these and I am considering using some 1000 grit sandpaper and a dremel to fix this massive, glaring issue. I have a pair of rather old (at this point) shure SE215 IEMs, and the memory foam tips on those are incredibly comfortable and secure by comparison- I'd trust those things to stay in skydiving. This is because they are a pretty simple device with relatively powerful drivers, with a large chamber and long, narrow port for the sound to travel through. However, when you have to cram batteries, circuitry, sensors, and pogo pins, the remaining space for good drivers in earbuds is pretty low; and to have good battery life they must work with less power. All these things combined means buds compensate with a smaller driver, shorter port, and wider diaphragm. All of those hamstring sound quality and comfort that you do not have to compromise with wired IEMs. The sound quality is comparable to the earbuds that came with the original ipod, i.e. it is OK, but the ANC and transparency mode are mostly useless and I typically just hit pause instead of enabling transparency. A pair of good IEMs basically acts as earplugs and will have naturally good noise cancellation, but these have such a poor seal that the ANC cannot adequately compensate. ANC is either on or off, unlike a pair of Bose QCs, so there's no fix. The software is not as terrible as people complain about online, but I wish that it had an android widget that gives faster access to seeing the battery life, because the app is pretty bloated and slow to load, and that's the one piece of information that I regularly need to know. If the software were open source I think all the firmware and software based papercuts would be relatively easy to fix. I've had no problems with connectivity; they always connect to my phone almost immediately. Overall the comfort and sound quality is maybe half as good as my very basic Shure IEMs with their wired bluetooth adapter, enough that I am considering fixing the adapter for those to have phones that are good for exercising again. Though that setup was never ideal, it'd at least be less liable to fall into the toilet than these things.

I bought these after my previous earphones broke. Right away, I was impressed by the audio quality and how snugly they fit in my ears. The battery life has been great so far, so I'm very happy with them so far!
