Panasonic Lumix S 26mm f/8 Reviews

Zone focusing snap shots on your L-mount camera, but why can't we have automatic focus assist?!?

What a weird lens. The best use case I know of for this lens is to set your camera on auto-iso, set the lens at a fixed distance, and use it like one would doing zone-focusing in street photography or other snapshot-type shooting. Or, set fixed ISO and combine this lens with a manual flash and you can have a lot of fun: set both the flash and the lens to two meters and start snapping. I will keep it for this use case (e.g. on the beach during sunset with a fill flash is a perfect example of where this can be fun). The one big FRUSTRATION with this lens is that even though it talks to the camera with electrical contacts, they failed to give it the ability to tell the camera when the focus ring is being turned. WHY? That's the whole point of putting those electrical contacts in there; when I turn the focus ring on a manual-focus brand-name lens like this I expect the camera to automatically activate the focus assist. Voigtlander manual lenses made for Nikon and Sony do this for you. Why can't we have nice things in L-mount? You might as well get one of those cheap third-party manual "character" lenses instead, and gain a distance scale and an aperture ring.

Outrageous

The only official pancake lens for L mount. Better optical quality than any other M or L pancake lenses out there. f/8 + 26mm is a smart choice making it easy to focus. Limitations translate into creativity. I'm having fun using it. But the pros stops here. It is outrageous that they didn't put any distance scale on the lens and it even focuses beyond infinity. It'd be fine if it's a $100 lens but it's not. Fortunately the focus barrel is not that easy to turn by itself so you can find the hyperfocal point and just leave it there for most of the time. I'm using this lens on Sigma FP and Leica CL. The OpTech lens cover works well as a cover.
