WD Elements Portable Reviews

Great for Backups

I have used multiple NAS drive enclosures in the past. Many have failed, making me restore my backup from the cloud. I have used an older version of this drive for my work backups. Figured out that drive is 13 years old and still going strong. I decided to move my personal photo backups to these drives and the cloud. They are not the fastest drives compared to SSD, but they are darn good compared to other HDD and faster than the NAS. The only thing that WD needs to do is start using a USB-C cable. I have purchased this drive before, and will continue to get more as needed.

Nice little drive

I needed a physical disc (not SSD) for more reliable longer term backups. This drive is very nice sized, works as expected. the data rates are a bit slow, but hey.. its not SSD for a reason.

The manufacturer doesn't state specifically whether or not the WD 6TB Elements Portable USB 3.0 External Hard Drive is a CMR drive, but it's highly likely that it is as most HDD drives these days are.

Can this drive work with a Mac and a PC - at the same time. In otherwords, can files be read by MAC and PC - backing up two different OS's?
Asked by: stephen
The WD 6TB Elements Portable USB 3.0 External Hard Drive comes out-of-the-box preformatted just for Windows compatibility, but it can be reformatted to exFAT for Mac and Windows compatibility. However, note that exFAT has a higher risk of data corruption and is only recommended for transporting data between devices, not for long-term data backups. Also note that the drive can only be connected to a single host system at a time, so while formatting the drive in exFAT will allow it to be used with Macs and PCs, it cannot be connected to multiple computers simultaneously.
