BenQ RD280U Reviews

Fantastic Monitor

Fantastic monitor, I especially like the in-built light. I was waiting for the 120Hz to go back in stock but the 60Hz is just as fine for programming, which I primarily use this monitor for.

Next Best Thing to OLED (for Non-Gaming)

By JS
Rated 5 out of 5

I've been a fan of OLED tech since the Galaxy S2 and enjoy it on my laptops, but desktop OLED monitors still have many issues for non-gaming uses (writing, research). After agonizing over the choices, I took a chance on this BenQ and can report it's as good as you'll get. For context, I use this for school and writing; the apps I use most are Obsidian, MS Office, Scrivener, and PDF readers. It's a primary monitor to my laptop, which is on a stand to the side. Pros: + Well thought out menu and buttons geared toward readability. The center button lets you toggle between color modes for dark backgrounds, light backgrounds, and your last used setting. The monitor will remember your settings for each - brighter backlight for light mode, no autodimming for dark, etc. + Auto-dimming is spot on. + The MoonHalo bias lighting is highly customizable, bright, and also can be auto-dimmed. + There is a ePaper mode for reading long docs. I just use the greyscale shortcut in Windows with light mode, but it's worth mentioning. + Built-in KVM replaced my Thunderbolt dock, freeing up desk space. + 3:2 screen ratio gets more text onto the screen while writing or reading academic journals, and doesn't look janky when you flip it into portrait. Cons - If you splitscreen a window in dark mode with something unavoidably light, like a PDF journal article, you're going to have to choose between two settings optimized for one or the other. This is a credit to the monitor's great optimizations and against its intended purpose, but its worth pointing out. - This is a chunky, heavy monitor that might require you upgrade your current desk hardware. It weighs almost 17lbs without the stand which, with cables and a monitor light bar, will push the weight limit of basic monitor arms. I also had to upgrade my monitor light bar because it was too thick for my old one (BenQ Plus -- Pro). - Related to the above, you have to be careful about the menu buttons sticking out of the bottom of the monitor when mounting it on an arm or stand. - The speakers are tinny and weak, but the KVM has a 3.5mm aux out. - The KVM's aux and USB-A ports stick down from the bottom of the display, not out the back like most other plug-ins. In conclusion, this is a highly specialized monitor that will satisfy people interested in that purpose and an average choice for anyone else. I am happy with it and consider it a worthy successor to my old ASUS ProArt 18:10.
