Panasonic DMW-XLR2 Overview

Expand the audio capabilities of your DC-GH7 or DC-GH6 mirrorless camera with this shoe-mounted DMW-XLR2 XLR Microphone Adapter from Panasonic. It is powered by the camera directly through the hot shoe and provides two XLR inputs for using professional microphones, and there is an additional 3.5mm stereo audio input for alternative mic options.

The unit features a control panel with a clear cover that sports numerous physical dials and controls for changing the levels, gain, and low cut filter of each input individually. It also supports high-resolution recording formats up to 96 kHz and 32-bit float, and it provides 48V phantom power to either the dual XLR inputs or to the 3.5mm input. The high dynamic range of 32-bit float allows you to record even more information on the volume spectrum, without the need for constant level adjustments.

A cable clamp is provided for cable management, and a cold shoe mount on the top of the unit can support additional accessories.

The problem with this $600+ XLR adapter is that it says you can use it to record 32 bit float audio, but what it fails to specify is that you won't be able to control the audio levels with the dials. You might think that it won't matter because it's 32 bit float and you'll have plenty of dynamic range to adjust levels in post, but what can happen is that some louder audio can blow out the pre-amps on this adapter and distort the audio and you won't be able control it or save it later-- it will just be distorted and you're up the creek. An ordinary test at home might not create the conditions where someone who has a louder voice blows out the pre-amps, so it might take you awhile to discover this, and if it's more than a month, B&H won't take it back, and if you try to resell it, it's only work $112. Get a Zoom H5 Studio for half the price and record separate audio. That will allow you to both record 32 bit float AND CONTROL THE AUDIO LEVELS so that it's not too loud for the pre-amps in the adapter.

Provides XLR Balanced Audio, but Promised Audio Quality Not

When Panasonic touted this adapter as providing the ultimate quality audio, I was admittedly excited that this device would be the cure for the horrid audio of the built in preamplifiers in the S1RII. Sadly, that was not to be the case. The reality is that the audio frequency response is limited to speech range only. The 3.5mm stereo input is twice as bad as the XLR inputs, being 12dB down at the lower end of the audio spectrum, while the XLR inputs are 6dB down. In the days of modern digital audio, we’ve become used to audio response being flat +/- 0.05dB from 20-20,000Hz. So naturally, given the high cost of this adapter and it’s much vaunted “32-bit float” audio capabilities, I fully expected the rest of the performance characteristics to be on the same level as the dynamic range. Instead, I got a nasty surprise when I recorded music for the first time. The recorded audio sounded like the woofers were disconnected! I was certain I had mistakenly turned on the wind filter/high pass filter. After rechecking my settings both in-camera and on the DWM-XLR2, I was dismayed that I could only make it worse by turning on those filters. Apparently, there is a non-defeatable wind filter built into this adapter, which supposedly bypasses the analog preamps of the camera, providing a direct digital stream to the camera’s recording system. So, what’s the point of this expensive device if it can’t record the full audio spectrum? I’d rather have 16-bit audio and a flat frequency response than 32-bit audio and no bass at all. There is no upside to this device, as far as I can tell, other than the additon of the large XLR balanced connectors. To make matters worse, the 32-bit float with practically “infinite” dynamic range is utterly false. I set the menu to 32-bit float 48KHz and did some testing. So much as a hand clap will make it clip. Through much experimentation, I found that the Line level setting provided a relatively flat response that was down only 1.2dB (still considered “defective” on any digital recorder) at the lower end of the audio spectrum, however, I haven’t been able to find a mic preamp that is battery powered, compact enough to mount to the camera and provides plug in power to a 3.5mm stereo input jack, which would allow me to have a relatively acceptable audio quality. No matter whether I use a $100 microphone or a $330 microphone, the audio sounds squawky, like an old PA system from the 1950s. No amount of stacking equalizers in my NLE could make it sound good. Even stacking two more three EQ filters, to boost down to 20Hz by 50 decibels or more, couldn’t bring back what the preamp in this adapter lost. The bottom line is, if your purchasing this with the hope of improving the audio quality over the in built camera audio, save your money. It has limited utility if you happen to need to take a balanced feed from an external mixer, but outside of that specific need, it brings nothing, sonically, to the table.

Hello Paige! The DMW-XLR2 XLR can support up to 4 audio channels, and you can use 2 audio channels simultaneously. Please note that the DMW-XLR2 XLR is a microphone adaptor and you need to use it in combination with a digital camera to achieve high-resolution audio recordings. - S

Hello Brett! The DMW-XLR2 will not provide 60db gain. The adapter has 48V phantom power, however it does not have boost of 60db. We hope this information will be useful! - S

I dont have room to put this device on the top of the camera, is there a cable to extend the hot shoe port to this device?

The Panasonic DMW-XLR2 XLR Microphone Adapter is compatible with the Panasonic Lumix G9 II Mirrorless Camera. The RODE VideoMic NTG Hybrid Analog/USB Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone has a 3.5 mm out so you don't need a XLR adapter like the Panasonic DMW-XLR2 XLR Microphone Adapter.
