Creality CR-Scan Otter Overview

For advanced creators in a variety of design-focused environments, the Creality CR-Scan Otter Portable 3D Scanner can capture fine details in objects both big and small for digital recreation.

Utilizing a mix of short and long-focal lenses and a main scanning lens, the Otter gives you a single capture range of 53 x 33" at 39" with a scanning speed of up to 20 fps. With a working distance of 4.3 to 39.3", you gain an adjustable accuracy of 0.02mm at 60mm, with an adjustable 3D resolution range of 0.05 to 2mm, ensuring fine details are captured for enhanced precision. Infrared structured light technology uses a series of LEDs to capture items in a variety of environments, leveraging integrated color mapping, multiple alignment modes, and 24-bit full-color scanning to ensure pigment accuracy, reduce image shaking, and give you an optimize digital recreation of your subject. The Otter connects to your system via USB-C port with 3.2 Gen 1 interface, ensuring your captures are quickly transferred to the digital format on your Windows or macOS device.

Impressive Tool

Still a ways to go in learning the ins and outs of this tool, but the results are impressive. Works well with my Macbook Pro with an M3 Pro processor. As expected, long flat featureless areas are a challenge, but objects with texture and uneven shape work brilliantly. Scanned one of my daughter's stuffed animals, for example, and the scan is stunning.

I own a larger, turntable type scanner and a wanted to be able to scan larger objects as well as people. As I don't do CAD or 3D sculpting for a living, I couldn't justify spending 5K or more on a scanner. The Creality Scan Otter was within my budget and works great. It does take a pretty beefy PC or Mac to run the device and software, but if your computer can run modern games, you should have no problem. Software is very straight forward and easy to use. Scans, even without using markers, are very sharp, good enough for resin or filament printing. Holding the scanner properly takes a bit of practice - Creality really should have included a handle, but they will gladly sell you one! Otherwise, I have no complaints.
