Canon Cine-Servo eX-s 17-120mm T2.95 Overview

The PL-mount Cine-Servo 17-120mm T2.95-3.9 Lens from Canon is designed to combine the functionality and form factor of a broadcast, ENG-style motorized zoom lens with the optical precision of a cinema zoom. The lens is designed with an ARRI PL mount for use on a variety of cinema cameras and covers sensors up to Super35, and it is suitable for 8K/4K acquisition. This PL-mount model also supports Cooke /i technology and passes ZEISS eXtended metadata to the camera.
Quick Features
  • Versatile 17-120mm focal length with 7x zoom ratio
  • Supports 8K/4K cameras such as EOS C400
  • Detachable next-generation eX-s V servo drive unit
  • Supports virtual production with ZEISS eXtended data and Cooke /i technology
  • 11-blade iris for soft bokeh
  • 127mm filter diameter on hood; 112mm diameter on lens
  • 114mm front diameter
  • Supports ARIA (Automatic Restoration of Illumination Attenuation) with compatible cameras
Versatile Optical Performance
This servo zoom lens is designed with a consistently warm color balance that reproduces skin tones and works with HDR video. The 11-blade iris offers a natural, circular bokeh from fully open to minimum aperture. The odd number of iris blades produces a soft and diffused light beam when shooting bright subjects.
Support for 8K/4K Cameras
Canon's optical technology uses large-diameter aspherical lenses and anomalous dispersion glass to deliver optical performance that supports 4K and 8K cameras throughout the zoom range. Aberrations are controlled from edge to edge for clean image performance.
Next-Generation e-Xs V Servo Drive Unit
The next-generation servo e-Xs V drive unit on this lens has the same operability and usability as ENG lenses, adding faster focus and iris speed, Focus Breathing Compensation, and a USB-C connector. The USB-C port allows drive unit settings to be saved and loaded into other lenses. Also, users can record and save maintenance history. Three 20-pin connectors below the servo housing allow many Canon and third-party zoom, focus, and iris controllers to be connected. The drive unit can also be detached to be used in manual-style cinema configurations.
Remote and Virtual Support
The high-resolution, 16-bit absolute-value encoder enables high-precision location detection, making calibration easier when creating virtual content. The 20-pin connector can be switched to a virtual terminal to output zoom, focus, and iris position information.
ZEISS eXtended Data
This PL-mount lens supports ZEISS eXtended Data, which provides distortion and shading data for virtual production with compatible cameras. In addition to RF mount communication, 12-pin serial communication for standard broadcast camera systems is available.
Support for the ARIA Camera Feature
ARIA (Automatic Restoration of Illumination Attenuation) adjusts illumination so that light is more evenly distributed between the wide and the telephoto ends of the lens. The camera-to-lens communication at initialization identifies the lens attached. When zooming, the camera's gain is increased starting at the ramping point. Simultaneously, Peripheral Illumination Correction corrects light fall-off from the center of the frame to the periphery. This correction more evenly distributes light throughout the entire image.
