Ricoh WG-8 Overview

All-Weather Travel Companion
Reliably capture scenes in extreme weather or rugged conditions with the green PENTAX WG-8 Digital Camera from Ricoh. Sporting the greatest operating depth of any WG series camera thus far, the WG-8 is submersible to depths up to 65.6' and IPX6 dustproof. It can withstand extreme temperatures as low as 14°F, and its user-friendly design and numerous convenient features allow easy camera operation. It has a built-in ring light, 5x optical zoom, 4K-resolution movie clips, and much more.
20MP BSI CMOS Sensor | 4K Video and Movie SR+
The WG-8 provides sharp 20MP images with low-noise up to a sensitivity of ISO 6400 by utilizing a back-illuminated CMOS image sensor. 4K-resolution movie recording in H.264 format is available, allowing you to capture high-quality extended movie clips at 30fps. In addition to Movie Shake Reduction mode, Movie SR+ mode generates shake-reduction comparable to using a gimbal.
5x Optical Zoom Lens and LED Ring Light
The 5x optical zoom lens provides an angle of view of 5mm to 25mm, which is equivalent to a full-frame view of approximately 28mm to 140mm. A minimum focusing distance of 1cm allows for ultra-close macro photography.

Surrounding the lens barrel is a six-LED ring light, so you can capture clearer, sharper images in low-light conditions. The strength of the light emitted can be adjusted.

Extreme Durability
  • Waterproof and submersible to depths up to 65.6'
  • Shockproof against drops from heights up to 6.8'
  • Dustproof equivalence of IPX6
  • Resistant to temperatures as low as 14°F
  • Crushproof against weights up to 100kgf
Advanced GPS and Built-In Compass
The WG-8's GPS module automatically records position and travel log data onto captured images. Signals can be received from GLONASS and U.S. GPS satellites. GPS data, directional data and UTC can be imprinted on the lower right corner of an image.
Webcam Support for Live Streaming
Use the WG-8 as a web camera by switching to UVC mode, connecting it to a computer via USB cable, and then streaming Full HD video at 30fps.
3" 1.04m-Dot LCD Monitor
A high-resolution 3" 1.04m-dot LCD monitor allows for wide-angle viewing. An antireflection coating on the monitor minimizes glare and allows easier viewing even in harsh sunlight. Additionally, the Outdoor View setting allows you to adjust the monitor's brightness for optimized visibility.

Ricoh WG-8 Reviews

Rugged Compact Macro Beast

By Alex
Rated 4 out of 5
Date: 2026-08-05

This camera performs best in macro mode thanks to the built in ring light, it's a fantastic way to explore macro photography without buying expensive lenses and other equipment. It comes with a macro stand that screws onto the front for protecting the lens. As a compact it has a great rugged construction, so its suitable for beach days, hiking days, or other adventures you wouldn't bring your phone to. There's decent exposure options and filters too. The photos are sharp when under ideal well-lit circumstances, but the camera struggles in low light. It's a very pocketable size, making it perfect as an everyday carry. Fair warning, this camera may have you constantly looking down and around for things to shoot close up, the macro shots are fantastic

Great travel camera

The camera is perfect for the traveler. Sturdy, small, waterproof. It has every feature you can imagine. I leave it on AUTO, but it's good to know that they are there. I used a Lumix in the past, and it seems the functionality, features and user interface are identical between the two cameras. So the learning curve is easy. But I had a recurrent problem with the Lumix. The Lumix lens is mechanical, and pops in and out when the camera is switched on and off, respectively. It also mechanically lengthens or shortens when toggling between wide angle and telephoto frames. The on off switch is not shielded, and is easy to switch on inadvertently. If this happens in your pocket, the lens can jam, as it encounters resistance while extending. Turning the camera on and off can fix this, but not always. This creates a potential permanent defect. The Ricoh, on the other hand, has a fixed and recessed lens, even when shifting between wide angle and telephoto modes. This is a tremendous advantage over the Lumix. The Ricoh is also slimmer, and has a lighting/ flash ring around the lens, which is absent from the Lumix.

Does the ring light work well as a standard flash

Does the ring light work well as a standard flash for nighttime/indoor photos as well?
Asked by: Rachel
The Ricoh PENTAX WG-8 Digital Camera (Green) (B&H# RIWG8GRN) features a set of six LEDs around the lens (which Ricoh collectively calls a "ring light") featuring nine brightness settings that can be set brightly enough for use at night or in typical indoor light at close distances. You can enable the ring light from the flash menu. Please select the ring-shaped icon at the bottom of the flash menu with six white dots in it to use that. We recommend reviewing pp.54-57 of the manual for more information about that setting as well as how to set the camera's white balance to record color accurately during its use. It is also possible to cause the ring light to be activated automatically when the camera detects a human face by going to the camera's menu, then Focus Mode, then Face Detection, and then either Assist or Assist+Smile. (The latter option requires the human subject to be smiling to release the shutter.) The manual is here: https://bit.ly/4c9cjpw

how long does the battery last?
Asked by: JOHN
The Ricoh PENTAX WG-8 Digital Camera (Green) (B&H# RIWG8GRN) is CIPA-rated to allow for approximately 340 still photos per charge. Of course, that assumes not otherwise leaving the camera on when not being used to take photos. Moreover, it does not cover video shooting.
