The wide rear protects from side winds, and the narrow front provides additional protection around the interference tube.

My first one lasted for around 20 years and some mouse liked plastic foam and ate the top lol. Fits and works perfect!

I really like the foam, but.the wind protection doesn't work at all even with a light wind. Overall I'm using the mic mostly indoors, but I hope they improve the wind protection
