Tuned for NAS with NASware
Western Digital's exclusive NASware technology fine tunes drive parameters to match NAS system workloads, which helps increase performance and reliability.
Designed for Continuous Operation
Since your NAS system is always on, a reliable drive is essential. WD Red Plus hard drives are designed for systems that operate 24/7, giving users the confidence of knowing they can reliably access their data.
Tested for Dependable Compatibility
Western Digital partners with a wide range of NAS system vendors for extensive testing to ensure compatibility with most NAS enclosures.
Optimized for Lower TCO
WD Red Plus drives are engineered to use less power (versus previous models) and run cooler, which reduces operating costs and helps reduce heat in thermally challenged NAS boxes.
Powered for Strong Performance
Despite using less power, the drives have plenty of bandwidth to handle the mixed performance demands of multi-drive NAS systems.
Balanced for Increased Reliability
Hard drives that are not properly balanced may cause excessive vibration and noise in multi-drive systems, which could reduce hard drive life span and degrade the performance over time. WD's enhanced dual-plane balance control technology significantly improves balance and increases overall drive performance and reliability.
Limited 3-Year Warranty
Western Digital stands behind their NAS storage solutions with the assurance of a limited 3-year limited warranty and world-class support services for hassle-free data storage.
Desktop Drives vs. WD Red Pro
Compatibility
Unlike desktop drives, WD Red hard drives are specifically designed and tested for NAS and include NASware technology which fine tunes drive parameters to match NAS system workloads for optimum performance.
Reliability
Desktop drives aren't typically designed for the demands of an always-on NAS environment. WD Red hard drives are designed to perform under tough conditions encountered in high-intensity 24/7 multi-user NAS environments.
RAID Ready
WD Red hard drives are engineered with RAID error recovery control to help reduce failures within multi-bay NAS systems, unlike most desktop drives that are configured for generic use.
Noise and Vibration Protection
Designed to operate solo, desktop drives typically offer little or no protection from the noise and vibration present in a multi-drive system. WD Red hard drives include Rotation Vibration (RV) sensors that anticipate and proactively counteract disturbances caused by increased vibration often found in multi-bay NAS systems.

WD Plus Internal HDD Reviews

DOA Out of the Box

By Paul

One of two WD Red Plus 8TB drives I purchased arrived completely dead out of the box. The drive would not identify properly in my NAS, reported 0 RPM, no model information, no serial number, and was consistently flagged as physically failed. Swapping bays and testing against the second identical drive confirmed the issue followed the drive, not the NAS enclosure. The second drive from the same order works normally. I understand hardware failures happen, but a dead-on-arrival drive at this price point is frustrating, especially when it delays a new NAS deployment and immediately turns a new purchase into an RMA project. To be clear, this is not a criticism of B&H. I've been buying from B&H for years and continue to choose them because they've consistently been reliable and professional. The exchange process was straightforward and they handled the situation quickly. My issue is with WD's quality control, not the retailer. A hard drive can fail at any time, but a brand-new NAS drive failing before its first real use is disappointing.

Worked Great Although 1 HDD DOA

B&H Photo was efficient and expedited a 6TB HDD when one of the four I ordered was DOA. The rest work perfectly for my NAS in a RAIDZ1 configuration. So much room for media! Been running only for 4 months with one maintenance period in between but no issues after the DOA RMA.

Are these new drives CMR or SMR? Thanks
