SOMA Laboratory DVINA Overview

The Dvina Electro-Acoustic Instrument from SOMA Laboratory draws on the rich tradition of Persian and Hindustani stringed instruments while adding the modernization of electronic integration. Create exotic and mysterious eastern-tinged compositions or expand on the instrument's capabilities to create something totally unique. The solid ash neck and crossbar add to the organic, traditional feel of the instrument.

A neodymium magnet hidden in the neck is the main source of sound capture on Dvina, while weaker signals from the strings are amplified by a custom-made transformer built into the body. These principles resemble the function of a ribbon microphone and facilitate maximum fidelity and nuance in its sound. It is also exceedingly resistant to electromagnetic interference and feedback. Well suited for live performance and studio settings, Dvina can be connected to a stompbox, guitar amp, direct box, or Hi-Z input on an audio interface.

SOMA Laboratory DVINA Reviews

Incredible

No surprise at all, the Soma Divina is incredible. It is a niche instrument, but if you are familiar with the other offerings from Soma Laboratory this shouldn't surprise you. For those who aren't familiar, the Divina is essentially a 2 string cello with no resonant cavity. Instead it has a very high quality magnetic pickup that plays perfectly with FX pedals. Came with a great functional case that should keep it indiscreet as well as protected through travels. B&H photo had the cheapest price on the entire internet by $170. I assumed this would be offset with the wait time, but after saying the special order will take 2-4 weeks, the Divina arrived on my westcoast doorstep 18 days from ordering. No complaints, I am genuinely baffled that B&H can undercut the competition to this degree. Fantastic.
