Datacolor Spyder 2024 Overview

Learn from B&H Experts

From Manufacturer

Designed for photographers, content creators, and digital designers of all skill levels, the Spyder Essential Colorimeter from Datacolor is a monitor calibration tool for today's digital workflows. It lets your monitor accurately portray images that you capture, create, edit, and view. Calibrating a monitor allows for a color-accurate starting point for editing, allowing users to express their creative vision and share their work, digitally and in print.

Portable and rugged, not only does Spyder let users streamline their workflow for photo, content creation, and digital design, it also calibrates a wide range of monitors, including Wide and Standard gamut LED, OLED, QD-OLED, Mini LED, Apple Liquid Retina XDR, and more, optimizing color richness, deep shadows, highlights, and enhanced details, with support for up to 3000 nits of brightness. Should you need more, you'll be able to unlock upgrades without purchasing new hardware.

Thanks to Datacolor's Device Preview Beta, users will see how their images may look on other devices without needing to use the actual devices. Instead, choose from a profile option for a smartphone, tablet, or other device. This may also be used to soft proof and preview how prints will look for a specific printer model, paper and ink, and print service provider by using an ICC printer profile. Also featured are one-click calibration presets that can help achieve professional results. This software also automatically adjusts with a room-light monitor for more accurate previews.

Color Confidence That's Fast and Easy
Spyder lets you easily calibrate your monitor in only about 90 seconds, so you can be confident that you're beginning your editing from an accurate color starting point, saving you valuable time and effort in your editing workflow. The result? True-to-life color and fine detail capture.
Professional Results for Every Experience Level
Intuitive software and one-click calibration ensure ease of use and professional results for even the most novice user, while customizable calibration settings allow experienced professionals creative flexibility.
Calibration for Today's Digital Workflows
Spyder now calibrates an even wider range of laptop/desktop displays, including the latest technologies like OLED, mini-LED, and Apple Liquid Retina XDR, so that users can optimize the color richness, deep shadows, nuanced highlights, and enhanced details these monitors make available. Spyder calibrates wide and standard LED gamuts as well.
Color "Surprises" Are a Thing of the Past!
With Datacolor's exclusive Device Preview Beta feature, you'll be able to simulate what your photos can look like on other devices on your own calibrated screen without uploading them to other devices for preview. Device Preview Beta also allows you to soft-proof your image in print so you can view how your image will appear on paper.
Adapt to Shifts in Light
Automatic Room Light Switching measures and tracks the lighting around you to make sure your current display profile is the one best suited for your environment. Not every task requires controlled lighting so allowing Spyder to adapt the calibration to your room lighting will ensure your monitor profile is optimal. During a Room Light Calibration, multiple profiles are created for different room lighting levels.
Use CheckCal for Confidence
CheckCal is Datacolor's answer to the question, "Is my calibration still valid?" CheckCal performs a short test on your monitor to verify your calibration is up to date.
Keep Connected
A native USB-C connection comes standard with the Spyder, along with an additional USB-A adapter for added convenience when needed.

This was an easy to use device and I found my monitor was off-color. I'm pleased with how quickly it set up and I now feel more confident about the color in my images.

I still don't have a true white balance across my laptop screen and external monitor. I still have two different looks and have tried it a couple different times to see if I can get both to balance out but nothing is changing.

The Datacolor Spyder Essential Colorimeter is meant to be used with software on a computer to produce a calibrated image. It can be used with a production monitor if a computer running the calibration software is the source device, but it is mainly meant to be used with computer monitors.

Differences between Datacolor Spyder and Datacolor Spyder Pro?

It appear that Benq monitors with their preferred Pallettemaster ultimate software do not recognize or support the Essential version, only the Pro and other higher colorimeters.. They “work” with the Essential, but only if you call them Pro. And Benq says that you should rely on the res from Essential.
