This Bahtinov Focus Mask from Starfield provides an easy way to focus on the deep sky. Simply place it over the aperture of your telescope and focus on a bright star in the dark sky. When the image your camera captures shows even diffraction spikes with a neatly bisected X, the deep-sky objects in your view are in perfect focus.

Starfield FM-60 Reviews
Tried it on a DSLR
This item is probably meant for a telescope, not for a DSLR, but I tried it anyway. Even though it didn't work quite as expected I'm giving a 5 star rating, since I used it in a way that wasn't intended. It fit my tele lens that has a 67mm filter thread. For my 50mm lens (77 mm filter thread), the provided holders weren't wide enough, so I just used a piece of gaffer tape to attach the filter. I couldn't see the diffraction pattern when focusing, neither through the optical finder nor in live view, but the focus mask was still somewhat helpful for focusing. I did, however, see the pattern when taking a test picture with my tele lens. So, making small adjustments and taking several test pictures was a method I could use, see the attached pictures (taken with the mask still attached).
