Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II Overview

The Ultimate Portrait Prime, Upgraded
Slimmed, trimmed, and newly outfitted, Sony has upgraded its most popular portrait prime with the FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II Lens, featuring faster autofocus, smoother bokeh, and video-friendly functionality. Delivering top-of-the-line G Master sharpness and bokeh quality, the lens' pleasing image quality is well-suited for stills and videos in portrait, event, and other shallow depth of field applications.
Improved Optics with Smoother Bokeh
Sony continues to push the boundaries of G Master excellence with the 85mm f/1.4 GM II, improving its edge-to-edge sharpness and contrast through the correction of a wide variety of spherical and chromatic aberrations.
  • Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and offers a wealth of control over focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
  • A Nano AR II Coating has been applied to reduce surface reflections, flare, and ghosting for increased contrast and color rendering in strong lighting conditions.
  • Rounded 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
  • Two XA elements are now incorporated into the optical design, which features superior surface precision to suppress "onion ring" bokeh and for effective control over astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other spherical aberrations.
  • Two extra-low dispersion elements are featured in the lens design and help to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
Faster and More Accurate Autofocus
  • The autofocus is controlled by an XD (extreme dynamic) linear motor that contributes to greatly improved focusing performance, compared to the DDSSM system of the predecessor, including faster, quieter, and more precise AF that's ideal for both video and stills.
  • Faster AF means improved focusing when working with fast-moving subjects; support is available for shooting at up to 120 fps when used with the Sony a9 III mirrorless camera.
  • Internal focusing design promotes snappier, more responsive focusing performance.
Improved Control and Video Capabilities
Just as camera design has grown to appeal to both photo and video shooters, this lens has also been updated with a series of attributes that specifically appeal to video shooters' needs.
  • Focus tracking is precise and smooth even at frame rates up to 120p.
  • Focus breathing is further minimized, with added support for the Breathing Compensation function in select cine-line and Alpha cameras.
  • Linear Response MF provides natural, intuitive manual focus control.
  • Physical aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth, silent aperture switching to benefit video applications.
Compact, Lightweight, and Robust Design
Approximately 20% lighter and 13% smaller than its predecessor, the 85mm f/1.4 GM II remains a durable, portable, and versatile option with a wide variety of applications.
  • Two programmable focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch for intuitive focus control.
  • Hybrid construction uses both metal and plastic components to maximize both durability and a low-weight design.
  • Dust- and moisture-resistant design includes rubber gaskets at each seam and a rubber ring sealing the lens mount for ensured use when working in inclement weather conditions.
  • Front lens element has a fluorine coating that repels water, oil, and other contaminants and makes the lens easier to clean.

Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II Reviews

A perfect G Master Prime

The purchase of this lens came on top of a recent purchase of a G-Master 35mm/f1.4 Having shot mostly G-Master zooms for the past few years, I forgot how much fun it is to shoot prime lenses. Both the 35mm and now the 85mm require you to think more about your shot with regard to composition. If you’re willing to do this, the 85mm will reward you handsomely. The lens is crisp with lighting fast autofocus. The bokeh is simply magical when taking portraits. Low light indoors or out is no problem with a f-stop capability of f1.4. Overall, this is a perfect lens.

Spectacular but expensive

This is without a doubt the best 85 EVER. I've rented the older GM and have used the FE f/1.8 extensively but this is sharp corner to corner wide open and has lovely out of focus rendering.

I took this HDR video with the 85 GM II and A7R5 both outdoors and inside. The audio is from A7R5. Even in pans and hunting moments, there is minimal to no AF noise. https://youtu.be/qo3gEj5RGg4?si=FrMOW1Kfkezicy-N

The two focus hold buttons on the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II Lens are customizable for different functions, but not independently--both buttons will always have the same function.

The Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II Lens is not compatible with teleconverters. In general 85mm lenses are not compatible with teleconverters either. Teleconverters tend to only work with lenses that are 200mm or more.

How is the linear pincushion distortion on this new version?
Asked by: Joel
The Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II lens shows a notable improvement in optical performance over its predecessor, including in the area of distortion control. Linear distortion, particularly pincushion distortion, is very minimal on the GM II version. This is consistent with expectations for a high-end prime portrait lens, especially at this focal length. Any distortion present is negligible and easily correctable in post-processing if needed.

Is there a signifiant optical performance improvement over the first version? Like a new glass element, better compression, etc.
Asked by: Ali
For sharpness, down low (f1.4 and f1.8) there is a pretty massive improvement. At f2.8 and higher is about the same as the original GM. One of the biggest improvements though is AF performance.
