Is it possible to use this to pull a feed from a mixer's alt main xlr output to the camera?
Yes, if you pad the mixer's line-level output (~+4dB) down to the mic-level input (~-40dB) the transmitter expects. Without a pad you will overload the transmitter's input circuit. An inexpensive 30dB in-line XLR attenuator and a short XLR cable should do the trick.

can this be used to connect a Sennheiser 416 to ...
can this be used to connect a Sennheiser 416 to aZoom F6? can this sufficiently power the 416?
No, the Sennheiser XSW-D XLR BASE SET Digital Wireless Plug-On Microphone System is not compatible for use with the Sennheiser MKH 416 Shotgun Microphone. The Sennheiser XSW-D XLR FEMALE TX Plug-On Transmitter does not supply phantom power. It can be used with dynamic microphones and microphones that are powered with a battery. You could use the XSW-D system if you use a separate phantom power supply such as the Xvive Audio P1 Portable Phantom Power Supply with Rechargeable Battery (B&H # XVP1) to power the mic and then add on the wireless transmitter. Or for a Sennheiser wireless system with a plug-on transmitter that can supply phantom power, you could use the Sennheiser EW 500 BOOM G4 Camera-Mount Wireless Plug-On Microphone System with No Mic - AW+: 470 to 558 MHz (B&H # SEEW500BG4AW), which is a much better wireless system that operates on the UHF frequency band. We do sell other camera-mountable wireless microphone systems that will work. Please feel free to contact us by phone or through live chat on the website for further assistance.

Is this possible to connect a shotgun mic with the transmitter then have the receiver connected to a Zoom H5 to make a “wireless shotgun mic”?
Yes this is the right system to make a shotgun wireless, the transmitter has a female XLR connection for the shotgun and the receiver also is XLR male that works straight into the Zoom H5.

Can this be used to replace xlr cable from mixer ...
Can this be used to replace xlr cable from mixer to speakers? Would the quality of the signal be similar to cable?
While the quality is Sennheiser quality and should be as good, bear in mind this system only allows for the transmitter to broadcast the signal to one receiver. Which means if you have more than one speaker, you’ll need a separate wireless set for each speaker.

For sound reinforcement of speech with frequent rough handling from frequent travel, will a SM58 be a better choice than an equivalent Sennheiser mic for use with the XSW-D? If so why, if not which mic would be best and why?
The plug-on transmitter can be used with any handheld dynamic microphone, so you can use any mic that you prefer, regardless of the mic's manufacturer.
