Tamron AF14PC-700 overview

  • 1Description

The Tamron SP AF Pro teleconverter features improved optical construction, and is designed to be used with lenses that are f/2.8 and of focal lengths of 90mm or greater.

The 1.4x teleconverter (also known as a tele-extender) will multiply the focal length of the existing lens by 1.4x, and will cut back the amount of light by one f/stop. For example, using a 1.4x teleconverter with a 300mm lens will effectively increase the focal length to 420mm. A lens set to f/2.8 will now be f/4.

This teleconverter is not recommended for lenses wider than 90mm, e.g. 50mm, 28-105mm, etc. However, full AF operation is still only possible with lenses with open aperture of f/2.8 or brighter. Please be aware that AF will work properly only if there is enough light and contrast on the subject to activate the camera's AF sensors. Manual focusing is recommended when using lenses with smaller open f-stop value than those given above.

Note: When used with lenses with smaller maximum apertures (f/4 and f/5.6, for example) there will be little difference in image quality as compared with the standard Tamron teleconverters. When used with lenses wider than 90mm the SP teleconverters can actually compromise image quality.

Pro-series teleconverters are specifically designed and optimized for use with ultra-telephoto lenses (above 200mm) to deliver maximum resolution, contrast and color rendition without degrading any aspect of the master lens performance.
Improved optical design of 4-group/5-element for 1.4x and 4-group/7-element for 2x. Relative illumination is significantly improved resulting in better overall contrast and resolution across the entire image field.
Multi-coated elements result in crisper images.

    Tamron AF14PC-700 reviews

1.4x SP Pro Teleconverter for Canon AF is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good for extra Reach I am using this Tamron 1.4x SP Pro Teleconverter with a Tamron 150-600mm to pull in wildlife that is hard to approach due to water or terrain. You have to be ready to use manual focus if your subject is not in bright sunlight with good contrast. When the subject is focused correctly the results are good so it helps to practice and for me a tripod is almost a must to be able to concentrate on focusing. This can be frustrating if your subject is moving around a lot. Test shots on a fixed subject produced very good results with little or no loss in sharpness.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great for underwater photography I bought this for use with my Underwater camera system. I will be using it with the Canon 100mm f2.8L and the Canon 8-15mm lenses. This teleconverter doesn't have the rubber rings (which make them incompatible with many lenses) that the Canon TC has. All of the auto focusing functions seem to work properly. Keep in mind that you will have to add extension rings to your ports when using teleconverters. Also your focus & zoom rings will need to be changed. I found that the focus ring for the 60mm Canon macro lens works great with the 8-15mm/1.4 TC combination in my Sea & Sea housing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great accessory with the right lens I use this teleconverter with a Sigma 150mm f2.8 1:1 macro lens. I am very happy with the results. The image quality is still outstanding with this TC/lens combo and the autofocus will work in most situations. On occasion I have to manually focus close to the subject to get the autofocus to engage but I have not found that to be a problem overall. I primarily use this combo for small insect and wildflower shots. I would not recommend this TC to be used with the Tamron 200-500mm lens. I have tried this combo and find the results to be simply fuzzy. I think cropping with the original lens only will give better results than with this TC. And keep in mind this TC is not designed for the Tamron 200-500 f5-6.3 anyway. Bottom line I can recommend it but only for lenses that it is designed for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Fantastic I purchased this teleconverter to use with the Canon 100-400 lens on a 1D Mk II for stationary subjects in good light at a distance. It is an excellent little tool. I was a little skeptical about getting the Tamron at first over the Canon, but the $$ difference was significant, and I thought I'd give it a try. The image quality is very good. I was shocked to find that the autofocusing speed with this teleconverter and the 100-400 in good light on the 1D Mk II was actually fairly good. I was able to capture birds in flight with the teleconverter on at full zoom! On the 70-200mm f/4 IS, this teleconverter shows nearly no loss of image quality over the lens bare. I use this attached to the 70-200mm f/4 IS and extension tubes for macro work, and the combination performs very well. The caps that come with this teleconverter are cheap and seem like they might crack at any time. You should pick up a set of canon caps instead for this, and you'll be set to go! It will save you money and works very very well with minimal loss of image quality!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Missing functions w/70D and Canon 100-400 MkII Although Isuccessfullyuse the Tamron teleconverter on my 70D with a Canon 70-200mm f/4 IS L lens, some important functions don't work when I switch to a Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 II L lens using the same camera body. Not only will the camera no autofocus, but I can't use Live View with the LCD screen. I can shoot through the viewfinder using the latter lens and the Tamron 1.4x TC, but focus is only manual. The problems appears to be with the 70D, as autofocus is reported to disappear with that lens using the Canon 1.4x TC. This issue is fixed in the 80D. Grrrr. Not about to bounce for a new body, at least not yet.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Incompatible with some gear I bought this Tamron for use with my Canon 70D and my 70-200L f/4 zoom, which worked well enough. Since then I have replaced the 70D with the newer Canon 80D, and also acquired the 100-400 f/4.5 MkII zoom. This Tamron teleconverter works with the 70-200 on the 80D, but NOT with the Canon 100-400mm MkII. I just get an err 01 message, meaning the lens and body won't talk to each other with the teleconverter in the mix. When I contacted Tamron to find out what was going on, here was their response: "We do not testy [sic] our tele’s on other brand lenses so it is possible they may be incompatible. We do not guarantee functionality with our tele’s and other lenses." Be advised.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's allright You give up a bit of light (compensate with ISO) and a bit of contrast (correct with software) but it does provide further reach, as intended. The price is right. I would not buy a longer lens for a once-in-a-while use, so this is a nice solution. The quality, as I have observed, is fine. Wolud I recommend it? Yes, with qualifications on personal preferences.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Neat! A nice addition to my Canon 100mm macro lens. The extra magnification provides great closeups.
