HERCULES Stands DG307B-FS1 Reviews

Well-made clamping mechanism and height adjustment, wish the floor stand folded smaller/shorter

This is well made and does its job. It works well overall, despite some design idiosyncrasies. It is somewhat heavy, which is probably required for stability with heavier tablets. My main issue with the stand is that the telescoping vertical part of the floor tripod is quite long even when it is folded up. It would be better to have a 3-section telescoping tube that collapses into a shorter bundle for easier transport instead of the longer 2-section design they used. The clamp that holds the tablet is strong, secure and has nicely padded "jaws" to protect your device and keep it in place. It can require some hand strength to open the clamp springs for inserting the tablet. The height of the stand is easily adjusted for either sitting or standing use. It is essential to carefully position the tripod feet in the correct orientation to counteract possibly tipping-over the stand from the top-heavy weight of the tablet. The way the clamp mechanism attaches to the vertical part of the stand is a bit strange, There is a threaded fitting that screws into the top of the vertical floor stand that does not screw into matching threads in the tablet holder clamp. Instead, the tablet clamp part has a hollow base with thumbscrew that fits over the threaded part, and then tightens to it using only friction and compression to stay attached. Accordingly, the clamp that holds the tablet can rotate in the plane parallel to the floor, since the threads it is attached to are easily unscrewed with counterclockwise movement. As a result, you need to first tighten the threaded fitting into the top of the vertical stand, then rotate the tripod to correctly orient the feet, then position the tablet clamp on the tightened threads before tightening the thumbscrew to fix it into position. It also appears that the positioning of the angle of the tablet works only by non-adjustable friction built into the ball joint of the clamp connector--there is no way to tighten or loosen the friction of that ball joint. Still this stand works well in practice.

For when you want the best

“My tastes are easily satisfied; I am always satisfied with the best.” Oscar Wilde. This is the 3rd type of Hercules stand. I already owned two tuba/euphonium stands and two bass clarinet/ophicleide stands — all extremely well made, very solid, and very stable. Having had my iPad fall off wobbly and unstable music stands, I wanted a tablet stand that would be the best for orchestral use, both on stage and in a tight opera and musical pit. This stand is exactly all of that. The spring loaded tablet holder had more than enough tension to hold my large iPad Pro in portrait mode, and the tripod footprint is excellent. Only complaint is that it does not telescope as I would like. Fortunately, it still fits in an outer pouch of my bass trombone gig bag (sticking out several inches at one end.) And it is heavy — which is necessary for stability, of course (lower center of gravity.) Sonot adds weight and bulk while transporting, but I will leave one at the opera house; the other will have to travel with me among the three regional orchestras I play with. Highest recommendation.
