MSI X870E TOMAHAWK WiFi Overview

Enjoy smooth gaming and content creation performance by including the MSI MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI AM5 ATX Motherboard in your next build. Supporting AMD 7000, 8000, and 9000 series processors with the AM5 socket, this motherboard can be outfitted with overclocked components to handle demanding applications and AI-enhanced workloads. Ready for high-performance SSDs and GPUs, the AMD X870 features Gen4 x8 and Gen3 x4 PCIe lanes.

Designed to help simplify builds, MSI's EZ technology makes it easy to install up to two M.2 PCIe 5.0 SSDs and two PCIe 4.0 drives to store your games library, applications, and important files. Four DDR5 DIMM slots are available for up to 256GB of memory, which may be overclocked for higher performance. With one PCIe 5.0 x16, one PCIe 4.0 x16, and one PCIe 3.0 x16 slot, you can add multiple graphics cards and other compatible expansions.

The rear panel features two USB4 ports that can transfer up to 40 Gb/s with compatible devices or connect a USB-C compatible 8K display. There's also one USB-C and two USB-A ports that work with 10 Gb/s devices. You can reserve the three 5 Gb/s USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports and the four USB 2.0 ports for peripherals such as mice, keyboards, and webcams. An internal header allows you to use a 20 Gb/s USB-C Gen 2x2 port on the front panel. Built-in Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) support and a 5 Gb/s Ethernet port provide you with connections to compatible network devices for smooth video streaming and low-latency online games. Windows 11 64-bit is required to take advantage of all the motherboard's features.

EZ Installation
EZ M.2 Clip II
MSI's EZ M.2 CLIP II makes SSD installation seamless. Insert the SSD into the M.2 slot and press it down to lock it in place with the clip. Flicking the clip outward lets you remove the SSD. Use the EZ M.2 Clip II remover tool to detach or reposition the clip on the motherboard.
EZ PCIe Release
An easy-to-access physical button release mechanism helps to remove any PCIe card with a single tap, making it easier to upgrade to a new GPU or other compatible device.
Flash BIOS
Flash the BIOS with only a connected power supply and a flash drive. No CPU or memory required.
Clear CMOS

EZ OC Tuning
  • MSI's Performance Preset allows you to easily boost performance by setting the power limitations.
  • The Performance Switch combines AMD's Precision Boost Overdrive (PBO) technology with MSI's own overlocking settings for higher CPU performance.
  • MSI PBO Thermal Point settings provide maximum CPU temperature levels, allowing it to operate at lower voltage but maintain the same performance.
  • Config TDP is designed to provide an ECO Mode (65W) or a different TDP (PPT/TDC/EDC) setting for advanced users.

    Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS)
    Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) are safety devices used to protect against excessive voltage. All MSI motherboards are equipped with TVS. When the voltage abnormally rises, the TVS switches from a high-resistance state to a low-resistance state, diverting the excessive voltage to ground. This helps prevent circuit damage caused by high voltage.

    Shipped promptly and was carefully packed...more than I can say for Amazon. Price was lower than Amazon too! Nice solid 870E MB where there are less tradeoffs on secondary M.2 slots, and none of the funkiness needed on the previous X870 board. Online docs are good, and there are QR codes in the manual to Youtube videos for specific pieces. Even if you've done this before, and for me it was 10 years earlier, the videos are a great insurance policy to do it right the first time. Simple DDR5 overclocking was a straightforward EXPO switch. LED on the MB is very helpful, especially as DRAM training takes soooo long. Recommended!

    I noticed MSI's X870E boards only have Mic-In and a Line-Out, yet say they support 7.1 audio. How do I hook up my 5.1?

    In order to get 7.1 audio from the MSI MAG X870E TOMAHAWK WIFI AM5 ATX Motherboard, B&H # MSMAGX870ETW, you would need to use the SPDIF/Optical output; if your audio system only has 3.5mm, you would need to get a sound card with 7.1 3.5mm outputs.
