Adam Professional Audio D3V Overview

Designed for songwriters, producers, and discerning listeners, the black D3V Active Desktop Monitoring System from Adam brings German precision-engineered studio-quality audio to your home, office, or workstation in a cost-effective package featuring both analog 1/4" TRS and digital USB-C connections for flexible convenience. This pair of active monitors combines 3.5" aluminum woofers with dual 80W amplifiers to deliver powerful and accurate sound. The woofers are further complemented by dual-sided 3.5" passive radiators, which allow the D3V's low-frequency response to extend down to 45 Hz—a remarkable range for such a small speaker. High-end frequency content is handled by Adam's unique ribbon tweeters powered by dual 40W amps to deliver crisp, accuarate top end.
Fully Active Aluminum 3.5" Woofers and D-ART Tweeter
  • Optimized using ADAM Audio’s state-of-the-art Klippel measurement system, the extremely symmetrical voice coil and ferrite magnet system help minimize unwanted distortions and provide a linear motor for the woofer. Each one-piece concave cone is made of ridged, thick aluminum with a long linear excursion range, which delivers uncolored sound even at surprisingly high output levels.
  • The D3V is a fully active design with four individual amplifier channels and DSP-managed crossover. The woofers are powered by 80W amplifiers with the link cable carrying an amplified signal to the right speaker.
  • A quarter century of ribbon tweeter research and development has led to the creation of ADAM Audio's highly capable 1.5" Desktop Accelerated Ribbon Tweeter (D-ART). Each diaphragm is handfolded and glued, with 40W amplifiers driving each unit. Like the rest of ADAM Audio's tweeters, the D-ART incorporates crossover fine-tuning, which is managed by highly accurate DSP.
Passive Radiators
  • The D3V employs dual-sided passive radiators on each speaker for a total of four per system.
  • Each radiator consists of a stainless-steel plate as the moving mass, and a specially stabilized long-stroke rubber surround for the suspension.
  • Together they reinforce the lowest possible response of the loudspeaker through their interaction with the main woofers, as well as contributing toward the overall SPL of the system.
Direct USB-C Input and Balanced Analog Inputs
  • The D3V represents ADAM Audio's most convenient monitoring system thanks to the inclusion of a plug-and-play USB-C input. The loudspeakers behave as a digital output device when connected to a computer, mobile, or tablet, which negates the need for an additional audio interface. This direct digital connection facilitates high-quality audio playback without the compression or conversion normally associated with desktop monitors.
  • In addition to the USB-C input, the D3V features analog inputs for traditional audio applications. It allows for balanced connections to audio interfaces as well as direct connections to all kinds of hardware including synthesizers, drum machines, samplers, and DJ mixers. The USB-C or balanced analog inputs can be toggled by pressing the volume knob on the left speaker.
DSP Room Acoustics
  • On the backplate of the left speaker you can find three switches to counteract the typical acoustical issues that arise from speaker placement.
  • Position refers to the fixed position of the loudspeaker in the room.
  • Desk refers to the size of the desk in front of the loudspeaker.
  • Room refers to the amount of acoustic treatment in the space where the system is being used.
Headphone Output, Monitor Stands, and Mounting Options
  • Functionality and convenience played a major role in the design of the D3V.
  • The front-facing headphone output automatically takes over audio playback when connected, while detachable monitor stands angled at 15° are also included.
  • Additionally, there is a standard threaded 3/8" hole for microphone stand mounting on the underside of both monitors.
Injection-Molded Cabinet
  • The D3V's cabinet is made of high-grade injection molded ABS Polycarbonate, with thick walls and plenty of bracing to avoid vibrations and unwanted resonances.
  • The rounded shape reduces unwanted sound diffraction at high frequencies, while also paying tribute to ADAM Audio's long-standing industrial design heritage.

Adam Professional Audio D3V Reviews

Excellent small monitors

There is a lot of online discussion of budget monitoring but here's the TLDR: at the price, nothing is better. At slightly more than the price, there are a few other different options, but nothing significantly better. At 4x the price there are other options you should ALSO have. To get it out of the way first - these are NOT harsh. Earlier Adams when they hit the market 10-ish yr ago were indeed badly tuned. These are definitely generations better, lessons learned. The tweeters are "airy" and "open" and even when spaced too close they still image incredibly well. But they are absolutely not cheap/harsh sounding. The low end is impressive although they do try to play a bit lower than they should at higher volume. In the intended use - monitoring while on a computer - they can get plenty loud while staying under the limiters. BUT - they will not play excessively loud without distortion so if that's the goal - get something else. On a desk, they can play fatiguingly loud - but if you have someone on a sofa 10' behind you - get something else -- these are not main monitors they REALLY are nearfields. B&H helped me do a side-by-side with a few other monitors - JBL, Focal, Yamaha and Genelec. Around 2016 I did a comprehensive deep dive and among about 16 different models fell in love with the Genelecs. I listened to the Adam A7's at the time and found them to alternate between beautifully open and super fatiguing. I loved the openness and directivity but they weren't tamed back then - and the Genelecs just outclassed everything else. I couldn't spring for the Genelecs and got Equator coaxials... but in every blind listen, the Genelecs won my ears and sounded "right." I didn't know at the time how much music, tv, and film was mixed on them - essentially EVERYTHING at some point gets monitored on them (maybe not primary mixing but they're always on the bridge). Fast forward about 9yr and my ears still like Genelecs the best. BUT they've increased in price faster than their competitors and in my use case they're not super necessary. That said - we listened at B&H side-by-side with the Adam D3V and Genelec 8020 and both sounded "right." That's to say for dialogue/TV mixing they both sounded revealing and un-hyped. The Genelecs clearly had a VERY strong high-pass filter so everything below what sounded like 60hz fell off a cliff - totally fine, but the Adams played a few notes lower and rolled-off more smoothly on the bass end even in the showroom. I mostly listened to dialogue (podcast audio live and close-mic'd) and for the most part they sounded quite similar. I would say the Genelecs "disappear" 100% of the time - you never hear the enclosure or the speaker EVER. I would assume that's why everyone uses them at some point - very honest speakers. BUT there were a couple of interstitials on the podcast where the Genelecs flattered the audio and sounded fine where the Adams were a LOT more revealing. You could hear the closet the talent was using to record his V.O. It was kind of wild to be able to discern the specific space - not on the Genelecs but definitely on the Adams. I'm sure other monitors would render that as well but I was only comparing these brands. That revelation is why I'd say to get these. AND also the Genelecs. The Genelecs are industry standard, they're accepted everywhere. But they're more costly and I actually heard in person the one complaint some engineers on the super-high-end of things say - the Genelects can be "too hi-fi and flattering" sometimes. I have no clue why but even the little 8020 Genelecs sounded 'more expensive.' But the Adams were super revealing, fun to listen to, NOT harsh, and insanely small - perfect for my use case and certainly 'good enough.' Drawbacks - Inputs. USB-C (which is cool and sounds quite clean) and 1/4" TRS and - so get adapters.

I found the Adam Audio D3V to be accurate, with good balance from the lows, mids, and highs. The highs in particular are nice and sparkly, not letting a cymbal turn into hiss. I did not find them to be jarring or tiring any way – which is often mentioned with “accuracy”. With my own near field listening, the sound field is fully stereophonic and pleasantly. Adam released the firmware update to stop standby mode in Feb 25, make sure you update first.
