I purchased this SSD exclusively to handle photos and Photoshop files. I have been storing my files on external HDD's, all USB or early Thunderbolt. As file sizes have increased due to higher res cameras and more complex processing, file transfers are taking longer and longer . The longer times required began to really bog down my workflow and make things, well, tedious at times, The 4TB Envoy attached to my Mac Studio, both with Thunderbolt 5, has resolved this problem and really speeded things up substantially for me. I haven't done rigorous speed testing but operations involving file transfer have become much, much faster. I see little or no time difference in opening multiple large file (1-3 gig) on the internal SSD vs. the same files on the external Envoy. The Envoy was plug and play and pre-formatted for Mac, so adding this to my Mac Studio was easy. The fixed cable on the Envoy drive, which could be a breakage concern for some, is not an issue for me as this drive will rarely be moved. I am extremely happy with this drive's performance. I do hope prices for Thunderbolt 5 devices do come down though.

Solid product well worth it, fast plug in play and easy to use. Currently used for video content and editing. When this fills up I will definitely buy again

Since the cable is not replaceable, would I lose any speed if I used a USB-C extension cable?

The OWC 4TB Envoy Ultra Thunderbolt 5 Portable SSD is a Thunderbolt 5 device, so to maintain functionality you must use a Thunderbolt 5 cable.

The OWC 4TB Envoy Ultra Thunderbolt 5 Portable SSD, like all storage drives, can report different storage capacities due to variations in the way bytes of data are measured in decimal and binary as well as how they're formatted. The total number of bytes on the drive is the same regardless of the variation in these calculations.
