Lens Design
Weighing less than 3 lb and measuring 10.1", the lens design is optimized for handheld use. The 5.5 stops of optical image stabilization further aids handheld use by compensating for camera shake. In situations where extra stability is required, the tripod collar foot is Arca-type compatible for use with tripods and monopods.
The optical design comprises five extra-low dispersion elements and two super extra-low dispersion elements, which help to reduce distortions and color aberrations typically found in lenses of this length. The 21-element, 14-group optical design delivers the sharpness and clarity necessary when shooting with 40.2MP X-series sensors, while the rounded, 9-blade diaphragm delivers a smooth and rounded bokeh that's further augmented by the spatial compression inherent in super telephoto focal lengths.
Linear Motor Autofocus
A Linear Motor autofocus system delivers fast, accurate, and near-silent performance that's further enhanced by the subject detection algorithms in X-series cameras. Additionally, the lens includes presets designed to minimize focus times, ideal for stopping quick-moving subjects.

Near Perfect Lens with a Learning Curve

I bought this one used in mint condition. The lens is nice and light for its focal length. Gone are the days of carrying 400mm f/2.8 Ais lenses from the 80's and returning home with bruises on my shoulders. This one fits in my motorcycle pannier bag, so I can zip out and do a shoot for two kinds of therapy. Optically it's superb. The lens has a very nice rendering to the image, with a smooth transition from in and out of focus, with no distracting bokeh, like some of the PF lenses have. It's sharp, yet also creamy in the bokeh. This lens was designed for the GFX series with a medium format image circle, and on XF you're really just using the prime center portion of the image. The learning curve is because it's a very long focal length lens with a lot of magnification. In FF terms it's an effective 762mm. It's great for small mammals, songbirds, and ducks, but probably too long for spots, or the air show. It's sometimes hard to find your subject in the viewfinder, because you're looking at such a small portion of the scene through this lens. This is really Fuji's 800mm class lens. On one hand, it feels too long, on the other hand, I'm still cropping substantially for small birds, so if it was any shorter I'd be cropping even more. You can handhold this at low shutter speeds, 1/60th is fine for relatively still subjects like my bunny photo. It does work with the 1.4x teleconverter from the XF200mm lens, but I've only used it for tripod mounted moon photos so far. I can't imagine needing that much focal length for wildlife but I'll try it at some point. The nice thing about it's focal length, is that you probably won't feel the need to add a teleconverter and will be able to enjoy its native image quality. It's a prime, so you're getting prime image quality, but you can't zoom out to find your subject. I'm currently using an old X-T3 body, so I'm anxious to try it on a newer body with improved AF. I plan on adding an X-H3 when they announce it. It's been very nice addition to my camera kit, allowing wildlife photography which I wasn't covering well before.

Take very sharp images. For 500mm this is a light lens, very suitable for hand held. Works well with Fuji 2xTC, but you'd need to have firmware of both camera and lens updated to latest version. Love working with this lens.

Is it worth the upgrade from a 150-600mm - primary use case being bird and wildlife photography?

The Fujifilm 500mm 5.6 lens has faster focusing, is better for low-light shooting at dusk/dawn, and is optically a sharper quality lens than the Fujifilm 150-600mm lens. The only disadvantage would be the lack of zoom versatility but overall it is an upgrade.
