Firmware Update V4
The V4 firmware update adds a plethora of new functionalities to the BM5 interface for more intuitive image control and connectivity.
In the color category, the update adds a Before LUT Detection option in the Log Stops feature, an on-screen display of LUT files, separate switches for color calibration data, and a color bar to the Log Stops UI.
Additional control updates include an image flip function on the Function menu, dynamic range control in settings, an image settings category, another signal source input to the monitoring category, an F-key preset page, brightness and fan adjustment, input power selection, and transparency options for the guide box.
Professional-grade monitoring tools also received an upgrade with adjustable length and thickness options, new color options, a false color preset, edits to the Anamorphic image configurations, and an RGB histogram overlay.
Control is expanded for Sony cameras with the update. Shutter angle and shutter speed switches can be performed with the Sony FX3, FX30, and FX2. Touch Focus Frame and Touch Focus Tracking Frame can be displayed from Sony cameras connected to the monitor via USB-C. USB-C control can be facilitated from the monitor for the Sony a7V camera. White balance and color temperature control can be adjusted for all compatible Sony cameras.
Other camera brands have also been given a boost. Automatic connection can be facilitated with RED DSMC2 cameras. Canon EOS R5 II and R6 III cameras can be controlled via USB-C. The Panasonic GH7 has been added to the list of wired camera control compatibility.
Flexible Color Controls
The BM5IV uses three color gamuts to properly calibrate your image: 100% REC.709, 85% P3-DCI, and 85% P3-D65. You can manually select your Log mode, toggle Log false color, and select your own custom false color from 77 colors and 15 different segments. The monitor is factory calibrated with the option for users to create a 3D calibration LUT and an X-Rite color probe.
CINEFORM OS
CINEFORM OS powers the monitor and allows you to configure settings to suit your workflow. Import two sets of custom color calibration files, create seven custom control pages, and save it all to the included micro-USB drive for import to another monitor and streamline your workflow.
Dual-Screen Monitoring
When taking in multiple camera signals via the HDMI and SDI input ports, you can select different dual-screen monitoring configurations to view both images simultaneously. Choose between horizontal to vertical crop, picture-in-picture, dual vertical, dual horizontal, and vertical/horizontal split views.
Connectivity
This upgraded BM5IV monitor features the same HDMI input, SDI input, and SDI output ports found on the previous model with the addition of an HDMI output, allowing you to convert signals with ease. The HDMI ports can support up to 4K60 video, while the SDI ports can support up to 1080p60 video. A USB-A port helps facilitate firmware updates and uploads 3D LUTs to the monitor.
Wired Camera & Motor Control
A micro-USB remote connection facilitates camera control with select camera models from RED, Sony, Blackmagic Design, Canon, Panasonic, and Z CAM using separately available cables. The BM5IV can also be used in tandem with your Tilta Nucleus N/M wireless focus system using its UART port for calibration and limit setting.
Multiple Power Options
Use the 4-pin interface and included D-Tap cable to connect compatible power sources directly to the monitor. A built-in NP-F battery plate supports compatible batteries.
Robust Design
The monitor is constructed of durable aluminum alloy to withstand the rigors of production. The integrated fan can be set to switch to its lowest setting once the recording is toggled to minimize audio distortion.
I don't know what to say. I was very excited for the price/features, but it has some major flaws that are hard to miss.
PROS:
Good build quality
Bright
The Horizontal/Vertical crop on the same page is a great feature
Good exposure/focus tools
CONS:
This monitor is loud; you can control the fan speed, but I don't know what happens with heat dissipation, and the max setting is very loud.
UI is not as intuitive or responsive as SmallHD.
I had some trouble with the HDMI out. I don't know if it is my unit, but it doesn't let me select the output, and it just seems overly complicated.
And the worst one for me, I spent the first day making custom pages, just as I would on a SmallHD, an exposure page, a focus page, h/v crop, etc. Only to arrive at the location, and when powering the unit, all custom pages are deleted. And even then, after customizing it again mid-shooting, I turned it off, and it deleted my custom pages again. Absolutely insane.
Maybe it's bad luck, but guess is time to go back to the all reliable SmallHD one more time. You pay what you pay, sadly...

Can the Portkeys BM5 IV add a LUT to the HDMI out?
Asked by: Ariel
The PORTKEYS BM5IV 5.5" HDMI/SDI Touchscreen Monitor is not able to add a LUT to the HDMI output, only the SDI output. The PORTKEYS LH7P 7" High-Bright Touchscreen Monitor with Wireless Control (Black), BH #POLH7PB, would be an option that can apply a LUT to the HDMI output.
